beck72
Konerko is mentioned as the Sox player being moved this offseason. Yet only Ariz. has been mentioned as possbily wanting him [with the caveat that he's sign an extension, seeing how he lives in AZ in the offseason]. But what other teams may want the slugging 1B? What teams also have players that could help the Sox. I've come up with one: Washington. I saw Ken Rosenthal's piece on 11-22 mentioning that CF Endy Chavez may be the next player moved by WASH. And Nick Johnson's name has been out there. With WASH. wanting to make a splash, and short on power, they could deal for PK. He's also a 1 yr deal. They signed Guzman and Castillo to multiyr deals and a one yr guy who'd be off the payroll in 2006 could give them flexibility yet good production for 2005. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get a # 3 SP signed to a 3 yr deal for them, as they could be decent. Instead of getting another position player locked up long term, get a SP signed. Also. Wilkerson could stay in the OF While Gload is often mentioned as PK's replacement, he's a risk for starting 1B. How about a deal along the lines of Johnson, SP Tony Armas, Jr, and a reliever [one of Francis Beltran, Chad Cordero, or Luis Ayala [he's prob not available] Both Johnson and Armas have injury risks to them. Though Johnson doesn't have anything that should hold him back, GLoad could still be around in case an injury pops up. Armas also came back at the end of 2004 to be semi-effective [he looked rusty, and struggled with his control at times] Yet the Sox need to fill multiple holes. Armas could easily fill the 5th spot, and be possibly much more. He was talked about having more upside than Vazquez before getting injured in 2003. A strong arm like Beltran or Cordero could be had [both struggle with control at times but both are young and throw heat]. Thoughts? Any other teams? I know things will shake themselves out once free agents sign like Delgado and Sexton. But it doesn't hurt to speculate.
AngelasDaddy0427
I know this is going to seem stupid but I think the Yanks are going to be interested in a new 1B. I mean I can't imagine they wouldn't want to upgrade Olerud, who knows what is happening with Giambi. I could see a Vasquez for Konerko deal happening. Guest JimH
Seattle is after Delgado and Baltimore wants Sexson or Delgado. Arizona wants Sexson. Like you said, when it all shakes out, the market for Konerko will become clearer. Washington is a maybe, possibly a sleeper team or two. I think it'll take a while, probably at least mid December. I've long said if the Sox don't use PK for RJ they will try to get involved in the deal anyway and pick up Javier Vazquez. However if that doesn't happen I kind of think the Sox will keep Paul Konerko and instead look towards free agency for a starting pitcher. But Beck a deal with the Expos would be more then fine with me, they have some pieces that would work. But I don't think your going to get Chad Cordero out of Montreal, if they did, I'd be giddy. If Seattle or Bmore both lose out on them that could be a very nice situation. Joel Pineiro and Randy Wynn could look nice, especially if the Mariners desperately want to add power at 1b. The Sox would probably have to include something extra, but thats a deal I'd be really interested in.
CanOfCorn
I think we would need a little more than Piniero and Winn. A B+ prospect perhaps. I hear they have this kid Jeremy Reed.

Like I have stated in 5 previous threads there is no market for Konerko, therefore little value, despite the fact that everyone thinks he is so great. PS - Gload sucks as well. Not to be a jerk, but it doesn't sound too bad to have a 40 hr, 100 rbi guy on your team. That's why we can eek out a little more from some teams, cuz honestly, we don't really have to give him up. Yeah, it will help payroll, but it's not an absolute necessity. I don't think "stuck" is a word you would use for Konerko.

I had no intention of starting an argument,a s I have nothing tangible to back up my viewpoint, other than the fact that it is my opinion. We'll see what happens. Keep him then, I believe this: He is slow Can't score from second on a single. Will not have a year like last year. When in a funk he has a hard time getting out of it. Takes too long. Too many double play balls average at first defensively. I know we can get other first baseman for cheaper, maybe not with 40hr's but certianly 20-25 hrs 80 rbi's, just as good defensively and better on the bases. In addition we can save some dough. if he was so great then people would be lining up for him. They are not. My opinion, as a guy who watches him fold in the clutch too many times. I agree with you on some points...but most teams are set at first. Obviously AZ and either Seattle or Bmore aren't (unless the Sexson rumors are true), but this isn't a year of big 1b openings. That could work in the Sox favor, or against it. All I'm saying is, the Sox don't HAVE to trade Konerko, which puts them in a better position overall. I realize this may sound tongue and cheek, but if they do keep him they better upgrade significantly to contend. otherwise its third place.
