I even made sure to replace the Russell logo with the Majestic logo.

That is damn impressive.

Out of curiousity, how would people feel if the only two moves we made this off season were to sign Renteria and Jared Wright?  Would that be "successful"?

No

pffft...

I can do that.

I think those two moves alone would be great. However, I think if those were to take place we could trade Pauly and plug any other remaining holes such as reliever and an outfielder. Payroll would be reasonable and we'd have a pretty solid team, jmo.

I can do that.

Let's see your RJ picture you made last July. I could have sworn you had him in a black jersey in your avatar.

Well, I'm still a newbie, but I would like to see that picture you had of him again.

If we do get Rentaria I would hope we'd keep Harris anyways.

You have been here for more than a year... wasn't that picture minny had of randy johnson terrible?

I meant making pictures.

His Randy Pic was really blurry, and the "Sock in the diamond" patch was hanging off his sleeve.

Come on Minny, show it!

Starting pitching has to be the priority. Without another quality starter we're in no better shape than last season.

Renteria isn't worth $7 million a year to the Sox when they have Juan Uribe entering his prime years and on the cheap.  I'd rather save the $6 million salary differential and put it to picking up Luis Castillo's $5 million salary and his .370 career OBP from the Marlins, or putting it toward Matt Clement.  There's more value to be had elsewhere.  Or, in the alternative, paying Garciaparra an extra $2 million for the production he brings.

Disappointingly, there are very few free agents in the positions the Sox need the most, like catcher and second base and third base.

As to third base, I do have a feeling that Joe Crede will turn around next year.  He knows he has a problem with his swing and is dedicated to correcting it.  In addition, people don't hit like Joe hit in the second half of 2003 without having talent.  He'll turn it around in 2004 and I foresee a .280/.330/.480 season from him - with a 25-30 Cell-aided home run total.  He still won't walk nearly enough, but he'll hit for a higher average and have more consistent power.  With a .810 OPS, he'll be in the top half of AL third basemen, and no longer a 20-30 run drag on the offense.

The other issues is how much Konerko and Rowand come down to Earth.  My thought is that Paulie loses 8-10 homers, but keeps around the same average and OBP.  Rowand I think hits .280/.330/.440 himself, meaning that he'll be a solid CF contributor, but not much of a corner outfielder offensively.

Look for Carlos to go nuts in his walk year.  Think .310/.380/.550 with 35+ homers.  I'm dead serious.  He's in his prime, has figured out how to hit, and is going to come in loaded for bear in 2005.

I'd love for the Sox to get Luis Castillo [i'm sure Ozzie has tried various scenarios w/ KW to get either him or Pierre]. I just don't see it happening. Not w/o giving up Carlos, who does have a 2006 option yr.

IMO, though, I think Ozzie wants a "team leader/ captain type" ballplayer for the SS position [not just at SS ,but for any spot--first, the focus on Vizquel, now talk of Renteria] Uribe is young and talented. But is he a leader? If you look around at the position players on the Sox [or FA's], I don't see many team captain types. PK seems to have some qualities. But w/ all his bat slamming and crap after he pops up, somehow something is missing here. Ozzie loves Buehrle for the pitchers as a captain type. An old school type pro position player, who does the little things well w/o complaining, a "winner" is what Ozzie seems to want.

2B would be set with Uribe and Harris. Few teams can match the production those two can give splitting time there, with Uribe seeing most of it. With a Renteria signing, I could see Harris traded if Uribe has a similar yr like 2004

Crede I agree on. No doubt a few players could come down to earth--Rowand, Uribe, PK, Lee. that's why getting some consistency for the top of the lineup is a key for the sox. Renteria could bring that, even if it means overpaying a bit. Yet it's easier to get a top of the order type guy via Free agency then it is via trade. Most teams need and want to keep their table setters.
