December 28, 200421 yr quote from article on mlb.com (regarding milwood) Clement was the last of the three pitchers to do so, and he ended up joining Wells in Boston after narrowing his choices to the Red Sox, the Angels and the Indians.
December 28, 200421 yr It really doesn't matter whether we finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 16th in the Clement sweepstakes.
December 28, 200421 yr It really doesn't matter whether we finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 16th in the Clement sweepstakes. for the money he got, i am glad we weren't in the running.
December 28, 200421 yr I'm glad the Sox didn't finish first in the Matt Clement Lottery. The Red Sox may well regret winning that lottery as much as that old Southern guy regrets winning that 314 million dollar Lotto.
December 28, 200421 yr Thats great, Clement is not a pitcher we want here..a journeymen who makes to much money IMO How much you guys/gals want to bet Garcia is kicking himself for signing that contract!! With his skills he could have easyly demanded 10 mil a year...

I doubt Garcia feels that way at all. At the time their was as big a buzz around him as their was about RJ right now. He's not stupid and I believe he knew he could of gotten much more on the open market then he got here at the time. I think he chose to play here because of Ozzie and the fact that maybe he was actually happy here.
December 28, 200421 yr Some of you guys are really hypocritical. When we were in the sweepstakes to sign him everyone was like "Yeah, were gonna a get a front line starter!" or "This is gonna give us the best rotation." Now, we figure out he wasn;t in the running to sign here and everyone says "Who cares." and "It doesn't matter, he got too much." BULLs***! We all wanted him here. MB, GF, MC, JC, and JG is a better rotation than the one we have now. I don't give a s*** about payroll anymore. C'mon guys, let' be real. We all wanted him here. I don't think theres any question that he is better than El Duque. Don't ge me wrong, I love El Duque but I would like Clement in a White Sox jersey better. It's bulls*** to say somthing before the outcome and when you see the results, change your mind. PLEASE! I dont give a f*** if he was on the Cubs, Yankees, Devil Rays A Team, or in the Azerbeijan Minor Leaugues. If he is gonaa help our team, good.
December 28, 200421 yr Now as far as Freddy goes, I'm glad we got that contract signed during the season. He could be making big money right now with another team in need of a starter or that signed and overpaid for a starter. The Reds, Mariners, Yankees, Red Sox, and a couple other teams could have paid him a lot more than we do. He made the right choice in the end.
December 28, 200421 yr oh well, we didn't get him, now it doesn't really matter if we were or weren't.

Speaking for only myself, I was glad the Sox were trying to get SOMEONE, not necessarily Matt Clement ( I wanted them to go after Jon Lieber ). But after the ship sailed, I was relieved that the Sox didn't raise the ante out of desperation. Clement is a decent pitcher, but the market overinflated his value. As it stands, given the payroll the Sox are allowing themselves to spend, they got a risky pitcher with the potential to be very good. Plus, Hernandez is cheaper and signed for a shorter term than Clement would have been. I think Boston overpaid for a guy who in my mind is a bit of a risk himself, having faded late in the last two seasons.

Boston's almost going to have to handle Clement like we are with Henrandez, very carefully by lowering pitch counts etc. Plus you don't just don't know how each pitcher is going to perform in their new park.
