YASNY
Mientiewicz besmirches the Holy Grail. Sneaking out of town with "the" baseball was one thing and Doug Mientkiewicz probably did something a lot of players would have done. But did you begin to wonder about the guy when he said, "That [sox-Yankees rivalry] wasn't all it was cracked up to be as far as I was concerned . . . I still say the Twins-White Sox series were just as intense as that one." Twins-White Sox? Yo, Doug. Where were you last October? Did they traditionally ring the Metrodome field with police in riot gear at the end of those Twins-White Sox jousts?

He's right, explain to me how there is a rivalry, when it's so one sided? Ok, let's see here, Yanks 27, 28 World championships, Red Sox um, hmm 1, 2 ? Ok, let's see here, Yanks 27, 28 World championships, Red Sox um, hmm 1, 2 ? Could be because they are always meeting in the playoffs instead of ultimately meaningless games in July? Could be because of a minor player in baseball history Babe Ruth, and the Curse of the Bambino? Could be because Boston and NY are two of the biggest cities in America and reasonably close to each other? Could be because the Evil Empire has won all those Championships and that pisses people off more than two mediocre franchises trying to win the Upper Midwest Series each year instead of a World Series? Could it be that if Minny - Sox was really a historic rivalry we would have a Nuke_Minny and not a Nuke_Cleveland

I wont even get into how tehy bashed the yankees for years, and then turned into them now. I was in boston for games 3, 4, and 5 of the ALCS, and i even stayed just 2 blocks from fenway, and I can tell you that their rivalry is nothing but overhyped. boston hypes the yankees sox series like its the be all end all, and the greatest rivalry in sports (which everyone knows is army navy...dont believe me? ask a midshipman or a cadet how many days til each of the next 3 army navy games...he'll let you know). The Boston fans like to act like they know the most about their franchise...well i go to school with a self proclaimed "boston diehard" who bought a chisox 1983 hat thinking it was a red sox hat. cubs sox is a better rivalry because it is heated by hatred for the opposition, as opposed to heated by the jeleousy and shortcomings of the boston "faithful" .........just my 2cents Edited February 25, 2005 by daa84

At least with the Sox-Cubs rivalry, neither team has really won jack. It's no rivalry when the WS records are so 1 sided, like the Yankee-Bo Sox 'rivalry'. Punch and Judy Garland
We have a solid rivalry with the Twinkies. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Th Sawx Yanks is the biggest because it has the most history. plain and simple.

WilliamTell
Yeah to me, the Red Sox and the Yankees is the premeire rivaly. The White Sox and Twins isn't a bad one though.
GoodAsGould
for me the best rivalries are when the teams are around even and the fans hate each other with passion.... in history of baseball the yankees have been >>>> than the red sox so to me it isnt that great of a rivarly...... I think the best rivalry in sports is the packers-bears one thats just in sleep until Favre finally leaves...... i mean cmon what other rivalry can take credit for inventing overtime in their sport? Yeah I agree with you, but the Red Sox have basically been very equal to the Yankees the past few years. For football, I say the Raiders and Chiefs because it doesn't matter what the record is, both teams fight it out. But I'm biased of course. Another up and coming rivalry was the Titans and Ravens before the realignment of divisions.
GoodAsGould
yeah the past some years the red sox yanks have lived up to their rivarly but does like 5 years of good competition deserve all the hype they get?

Green Bay's domination of the Bears extends Favre's entire career. Everyone sure as hell knows animosity between fans/players has yet to extinguish itself over 12+ years. This ultimately proves the record of rival teams, while important, isn't essential. I believe geography and history are the greatest factors to a rivarly. I never said it deserved it and it probably doesn't. It was just the fact that the Yankees are the Yankees and the Red Sox hadn't won a World Series in 86 years. Plus the eastcoast biased thing. Punch and Judy Garland
I think what hurts the Bears-Packers rivalry is that Bear fans like Brett Favre. It kinda lessens it. Just like the Broncos-Chiefs rivalry was more intense when Marty was there, as opposed to Vermeil who is so likeable. Now, as far as the Radiers go...... lvjeremylv
LOL. The Twins/Sox don't even hold a candle to the Yanks/Red Sox.
witesoxfan
I constantly see how the Sawks-Yanks rivalry isn't really a rivalry because the Yanks dominate it. Just because I'm a curious little guy, how many straight years have the Twins finished above the Sox in the standings? Like as many digits on my hand if I cut off my thumb? If the Sawks-Yanks isn't a rivarly because one side dominates, Sox-Twins isn't for the same reason. Also...LMB...I agree completely that, all sports considered, Sawks-Yanks probably is not top 10, though I couldn't tell you my top 10 off the top of my head. However, I do think Sawks-Yanks is the best baseball rivalry there is. There are some that are more intense then others at times(Sox-Twins, Sox-Cubs come to mind immediately, San Fran-LA has been pretty crazy, Cubs-Cards, along with others that are not coming to me because its Friday), but, all things considered, Sawks-Yanks > all. KWs OK for Me
I have to agree that the Raiders and Chiefs definately deserve to be called one of the greatest rivalries. I went to a Chiefs Raiders game at Arrowhead, Chiefs fans rival Bears fans for best in the league. The atmosphere at that game was just intense, and as always, a battle.
