No more explanations, no more minced words. The Hall of Fame coach from Temple perpetrated a crime on college basketball this week, and the punishment for that crime should be an immediate dismissal. In Temple's 63-56 loss Tuesday to Saint Joseph's, Chaney sent in a goon -- his word, goon -- to send a message. February 25, 200521 yr exactly Pahlehose... Goonery is a common practice. Cheney was the one who brought it up at the presser after the game, and apologized, and then excused himself for a game. No harm, no foul. Oh and you should save that Duke link, it's going to change like the MTV page that listed a "big Surprise" for last years superbowl.

The media :wub:'s Coach K, and they think he's just playing a hard-nosed version of basketball. February 25, 200521 yr Something more severe than 3 games is necessary... It was just so blatant. The clear intention was to hurt somebody, and that has no place in sports, especially college where you're supposed to be somewhat of a teacher and mentor. It's called good "sportmanship." Sending out someone who hardly plays to do that and almost bragging about it afterwards...Maybe not bragging, but he certainly didn't seem remorseful until after the media picked it up... The kid got his arm broken, for goodness sake... Look at it this way: Artest didn't break any bones but got suspended about 70 games. Three games doesn't do any justice.

February 26, 200521 yr As was pointed out earlier in the thread, "goonery" occurs quite often in college basketball, and even came from one of the elite coaches in college history. Chaney wanted to shake St. Joe's confidence, and he wanted to fire his troops up, but I do not think he intended for Bryant's arm to be broken, and his college career to be ended. The fact that he is taking responsibility for his actions is probably helping a lot too. 3 games is probably not enough, but if Coach K gets nothing for the previously mentioned incident, then 3 games is almost too much, quite frankly.

By the way, we don't have "goons" at this fine, upstanding Texas Tech university. We have cowboys and alot of nervous farm animals.

February 26, 200521 yr I see the intent of humor in your post Sorry I thought it would come across that it wasn't unreasonable, I just enjoy making fun of Bob Knight because he's a God here. Bob would have been banned from college basketball for good I'm sure if that incident came from him. Chaney has had his share of trouble in the past, but not quite to the extent of Knight.

Chaney was suspended for five games last month for ordering rough play by one of his players, who broke an opponent's arm. "This is just a reaffirmation of an agreement between Temple and John Chaney," athletic director Bill Bradshaw told The Associated Press in a phone interview Monday night. "There really wasn't anything different about this at all. There wasn't an earthshaking event or meeting." Chaney has a 724-297 career record. Among active coaches, only Bob Knight, Eddie Sutton and Lute Olson have more victories. Bradshaw said the university and Chaney would meet next fall to decide if Chaney wants to return for the 2006-07 season. Angered by what he thought were illegal screens by Saint Joseph's, Chaney inserted seldom-used, 6-foot-8, 250-pound Nehemiah Ingram against the Hawks on a Feb. 22 game to "send a message." Ingram fouled Hawks senior John Bryant hard. Bryant slammed to the floor and broke his arm. Chaney apologized and returned to coach the Owls in the NIT.
