Rams | Out of Running for Miller - from www.KFFL.com

Sun, 6 Mar 2005 10:02:09 -0800

Updating a previous report, Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams appear to be out of the running for free agent OT Fred Miller (Titans), as the veteran tackle is expected to decide between the Chicago Bears or New Orleans Saints, perhaps as early as Sunday, March 6.

He's old but can he still be effective?

Bears agree to terms with tackle Fred Miller

By Larry Mayer

March 7, 2005

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears on Monday upgraded their offensive line by agreeing to terms on a five-year contract with veteran free agent right tackle Fred Miller.

The 6-7, 320-pounder spent the past five seasons with the Tennessee Titans after playing the first four years of his NFL career with the St. Louis Rams from 1996-99.

Miller is the second player the Bears have added to bolster an offense that ranked last in the NFL in scoring, total yards, passing yards, first downs and third down efficiency last season. He joins marquee free agent receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who agreed to a six-year contract Feb. 26.

Miller, 32, has started 102 straight games, a streak dating back to 1998. After joining the Rams as a fifth-round pick from Baylor, he became a full-time starter at left guard in 1998 before moving permanently to right tackle in 1999.

Miller helped the Rams defeat the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV in January 2000 and then signed with Tennessee as an unrestricted free agent less than three weeks later.

With the Titans, Miller helped open holes for 1,000-yard rushers Eddie George and Chris Brown; and protected Steve McNair, who passed for over 3,200 yards in three straight seasons.

Miller was released by the Titans Feb. 21 because he was slated to count $9.32 million against the salary cap in 2005. Prior to meeting with the Bears, Miller visited with the New Orleans Saints. But New Orleans on Saturday signed Philadelphia Eagles free agent Jermane Mayberry, primarily a right guard with Philadelphia who is expected to move to right tackle with the Saints.

Why do they keep signing 32 year olds to five plus year contracts? At least they are getting some talent. Let's see if they can stay healthy.

With the NFL's nonguarenteed contracts, it doesn't matter. You can release someone at anytime, and you don't have to pay the rest of their contract.

Gotcha. I don't keep up with all the contract guidlines in the NFL.

Bears | Miller Contract Update - from www.KFFL.com

Mon, 7 Mar 2005 13:42:19 -0800

ESPNews reports the contract signed by Chicago Bears OT Fred Miller is a five-year deal worth $22.5 million. ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the deal includes a signing bonus of $6 million and base salaries of $1 million(2005), $1 million (2006), $3 million (2007), $4million (2008) and $4million (2009). There is a $2 million roster bonus that is due next March and roster bonuses of $500,000 for each of the final three years.

I like it.

Looks like a good signing for the price, the $2mil roster bonus next year may mean that he gets cut, but if he plays well enough $4mil next year for starting rt is not that bad.

If they can stay healthy, the Bears finally should have atleast an average OL.

Tucker will be gone, Q Mitchell I bet goes to a guard position and Tait moves to LT. I like the move... makes the O line a lot better than we have seen in awhile.. now all you have to hope for is good health!!

Yes...good health, a kicker, and Ronnie Brown.

With Edinger, I don't see us advancing past the first round (supposing that we make the playoffs). He's terrible.

Edinger has to get his head straight............that's why he pulled all those kicks to the left! Ronnie Brown is going to Miami and with the Vikings looking to trade up for Benson/Brown, the Bears might be out of the running for a running back.
