"Bucs give House his unconditional release"

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-re...e/s_311355.html

BRADENTON, Fla. -- J.R. House's season ended two weeks ago when he had surgery on his right shoulder.

His once-promising career with the Pirates ended Tuesday when House unexpectedly was given his unconditional release.

His right arm dangling lifeless because of the surgery, House had to shake with his left hand as he said goodbye to teammates after being informed of the news by Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield.

"It was out of the blue," House said.

The 25-year-old catcher will become a free agent once he clears waivers in the next 48 hours and will collect 30 days of termination pay from the Pirates.

J.R. House (Minor League Totals)

.304 career AVG

.502 career SLG

.371 career OBP

.873 career OPS

This guy could be a stud if he can ever get healthy. We could sign him like Alex Escobar and let him heal up for next season.

It's too bad this guy can't stay healthy...

BRADENTON, Fla -- J.R. House's once promising career with the Pirates organization came to an abrupt end Tuesday when he was given his unconditional release.

House, 25, was the Pirates' fifth-round selection in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft. He was selected as the organization's top prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2001 and 2002 seasons, and appeared well on his way his way to becoming the Pirates' next star. However, a string of serious injuries continuously sidetracked his development.

Since 2002, House has undergone reconstructive elbow surgery and surgeries to repair tears in his labrum, rotator cuff, and abdominal muscle and suffered a hernia. The labrum and rotator cuff procedures, which were performed in February by renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, are expected to sideline House for the entire 2005 season. His inability to play this year and the fact that he would be out of options next season led to his release.

I'd much rather have Davis than House until House could prove he's a suitable major league backup.

As far as a 1b/DH for when/if Paulie leaves....we already have one. His name is Ross and he likes talking about how lucky he is to have gotten his wife.

Yeah, Escobar really helped us out a lot.

Couldn't he be on the 60 day DL without taking a 40 roster spot?

I think he would have to be on the 40 man roster first, before he could be put on the 60 day DL with the big club, right? You can't just skip that step if I understand correctly.

OR did the Sox just sign Escobar after he cleared waivers?  But whatever they did with him they could do with House.

And your probably right Mike. You need the open spot and then can put the guy on the DL.

Sox claimed Escobar off of waivers, added him to the 40 man, and then placed him on the DL IIRC.

I think SS2k has the technicality of it down pretty much...that sounds about right.

Of course, I'm not sure what is stopping the Sox from finding a loophole in that...drop someone off the 40 that won't get claimed, sign House, put him on the 60-Day DL, and call that someone back up. Not sure if that would work or not though.
