March 17, 200521 yr "Guillen: McCarthy 'best pitcher we have right now'" http://www.suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-doug16.html He's the best pitcher we have in camp right now, no doubt about it,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I wish I had this kid last year; I'd have one less headache. This kid throws the ball outstanding. I wish I could promise him we could take him with us. I just don't see anything for him to be at the big-league level.''
March 17, 200521 yr He thinks very highly of McCarthy. The more and more I see of this kid, he seems like he's going to be the next Rick Ankiel(before control problems happened). He's going to be the Miguel Cabrera of pitching.
March 17, 200521 yr He reminds me a lot of greg maddox, doesnt over power you with his stuff, but has great control of it. have a great st pattys day
March 17, 200521 yr QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 12:15 AM) He doesn't have anywhere near Rick Ankiel's stuff but his command is very good. Have you seen mccarthy's ''stuff''? It is damn good.
March 17, 200521 yr Author He doesn't have anywhere near Rick Ankiel's stuff but his command is very good. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> McCarthy has an 87 - 91 MPH fastball which is more than enough heat (think Buehrle) considering he changes speeds so well with his changeup. His curveball is excellent and Rooney and Farmer said it may even be the best on the roster. His control is outstanding (think Maddux). Edited March 17, 200521 yr by Jabroni

I even think his fastball is a bit faster -- Jason said he's seen Mac top out at 95 when he wants to give someone some high heat, but he's right in the range you indicated. EDIT: And while velocity isn't everything, you'd hope that he fills out his frame a little bit more and adds some more bite to that heater... Edited March 17, 200521 yr by CWSGuy406

Unfortunately I missed bmac pitch both times(right when I'd get home from school, he'd be taken out ) Keith, tell me if I'm wrong here, it sounds like he has a lot of movement on his fastball and he obviously spots that pitch excellently. IMO, movement is more important then the velocity on the fastball and if you can spot that pitch it's almost impossible to hit.

Which is part of the reason I think our pitchers have stayed healthier than their northside breathren. None of our guys throw as hard as they can. The radar gun isn't the primary objective for us. Staying healthy and pitching is.
March 17, 200521 yr I don't want our guys throwing as hard as they can. When you play in one of the best hitter's parks it's foolish to live & die by the fastball like the Cubs staff does (Wood, Prior, Zamby). It's more important for ChiSox pitchers to induce GB outs than to K guys out. Power is over-rated at the Cell. That goes for bats & arms alike. But in the same context you need power in the rotation & the pen to compete in the bigger parks on the road. Too bad Maddux didn't sign with us.

Ground ball outs aren't as effective on the road as they are at home?
March 18, 200521 yr Author Ground ball outs aren't as effective on the road as they are at home? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I didn't quite understand Juggernaut's comment either. I thought he was trying to get to the point that ground ball pitchers (i.e. Maddux) would probably have more success than flamethrowers (i.e. Wood) at the Cell because anything hit in the air has a chance of leaving the park. Basically, the less balls hit in the air at the Cell the better. Edited March 18, 200521 yr by Jabroni
