With the world's most forgiving fans standing, roaring, clapping and feeling it, Hawkins had a chance to erase some bad memories in the ninth inning and let the good people head to their bars and clubs with an Opening Day victory buzz. This was just a prelude tease, of course. Before you knew it, the sellout crowd was back in its familiar heavy-groan mode as Lyle Overbay ripped a double inside the third-base bag. Todd Hollandsworth might have prevented Junior Spivey from scoring the tying run, but as he retrieved the ball behind the left-field bullpen, he dropped it.

A come-from-ahead defeat is about the last bad pill anyone wants to swallow, given all the negative vibes swirling around the old park. Even the most optimistic Ronnie Woo-Woos out there -- and there are 10 or 12 Ronnies, I believe -- aren't nearly as confident this is The Year as they were last April.

He and Andy MacPhail were so busy getting rid of Sosa, Alou, Steve Stone and Chip Caray, they forgot to fix the real reason the Cubs flopped last season.

But on any list of Wrigley Field workers, LaPyro is definitely trailing the grounds crew, the beer vendors and the sportswriters while rating only slightly better than new TV broadcasters Len Kasper and Bob Brenly, who softpedaled a performance that would have been pummeled by Stone.

He had no idea where his pitches were going, couldn't retire the leadoff hitter and responded predictably in his first defining moment this year: sixth inning, Cubs leading 2-1, bases loaded, 3-2 count, fans standing and hoping he would blow a third strike past Russell Branyan like the 20-K days. The wind-up, the pitch ...

 

Ball four. Tie game. Wood out, Michael Wuertz in. Another season, another riddle.

At least maybe Mariotti is going to be an equal opportunity basher this year?

Last week, The Moron wrote an article about "the naysayers" who were against the hire of Bruce Weber, and then a reader sent in a letter stating that The Moron himself was one of those "naysayers".

I do love it when people call The Moron on his flip-flopping, even though none of that will stop him.

If the Cubs turn things around, The Moron will somehow find a way to congratulate himself for inspiring them.

He's right about Kasper and Brenly, they put me to sleep quicker than a bottle of Nyquil. And we all said that Hawk and DJ were homers....jesus they're the two biggest "yes" men in Chicago.

He will suck Cubs off by next week.

Marriotti has such a negative attitude. He'll constantly say teams are going to fail and if they do, he'll give himself all the credit. I seriously wonder if it's a self esteem problem.

It's good stuff. Believe it or not, and despite all the World Series Trophy's at the Cell, not everything the Sox and Cubs do is perfect.
