One more question about the playoffs

Featured Replies

From MLB.com:

What if the Indians and the White Sox are tied in the AL Central?

Next Monday (Oct. 3), the Indians would host the White Sox unless those two teams finish with the best records in the AL. In that case, there wouldn't be a playoff game.

Both teams would make the playoffs, and the first-place team is determined by the two teams' head-to-head record. As of Tuesday, the White Sox led the season series, 11-5, and are guaranteed of the better record.

correct me if I'm wrong, but Yanks can finish with 97 wins, so 96-66 and 96-66 for the White Sox and Indians will NOT be the two best records in the AL....

Enjoy the celebration..go drink, puff your cigars.

we will talk scenarios tomorrow.

What I'm saying is that I still don't understand how we clinched the division with the way that the MLB has worded the rules.

someone without some bubbly can explain, or go back and read thru the various posts on it.

We clinched the division because we have 96 wins. -- Only one of the AL East teams can finish with 96 wins, making them the AL East champion. -- If Cleveland finishes with 96 wins, they our the wild card due to are head-to-head record.

I'm tired of writing this... If you don't get it... too bad.

Well if the Yankees get the most amount of wins possible, 97, they'll win that division. Boston would end up losing the division and missing the Wild Card.

Then the way MLB.com worded this is incorrect:

because the "best records in the AL" clause apparently doesn't matter.

tie brekaer goes to team with best head to head matchup. cmon man just celebrate.

I'm cool, I'm just making sure that MLB.com worded it wrong.

Okay, just to make you happy, we will sweep the Indians this weekend. :D

We won today game. We clinched the AL Central Division. That's all we need to know!

go check out mlb.com and read the what it says on the front page.....white sox clinch division

I had to pop a bottle of............chocolate milk since I'm under age. lol

from mlb.com "Chicago's victory reduced its magic number to one, clinching a tie for the American League Central title. But even if the Indians were to sweep the three-game set at Jacobs Field this weekend, thus clinching a playoff berth, the White Sox would win the tiebreaker for the AL Central crown with an 11-8 edge in head-to-head play"

That was my understanding too. But do you see how one could get confused with the way that it is worded there?

What do the White Sox have to do now to have homefield in Game 1 and 2 ?

Dude! GO CELEBRATE!

Your original quote was wrong. A 1 game playoff for a division crown ONLY comes into play when the loser is out of the playoffs. The only scenario where that can happen is if the loser is runner up to the WC team.

The best the Indians can do is 96-66, & the worst the White Sox can do is 96-66.

If the NYY go 97-65 they would win the ALE & not the ALWC.

And..Boston would have no more than 93 wins, meaning Cleveland is the WCard.

Cool. My quote was wrong, so their website is wrong. That's what I thought. Stupid for them to have bad info on their website.

Win 1 game, and only NY could tie them with 97 victories, but that would require them to win out. I don't know how they would determine Homefield throughout in this situation, but who cares. 96 wins should be enough.

Who cares! We f***ing clinched. Do we have to go into semantics in the middle of the celebration?

Probably right, I'm asking because I have tickets for Game 2.

We are assured of Game 1 and 2 at home though right against somebody because the Angels can't catch us for most wins or even tie us.

When it's MLB.com who has bad info, I get confused. You know, they are the ones who make up the rules....
