It's funny to see you guys rationalize what was obviously a blown call and try every way to explain that the umpire made the correct call. October 13, 200520 yr You're right--I'd be absolutely livid if this call were to happen to us. Similarly, compare this to the intentional lean-in by Joe Crede in Oakland earlier in the year. Most realized he leaned into the pitch, yet still complained incesssantly despite it being the correct call. It's the nature of fans. However, this isn't exactly clear cut as ESPN makes it out to be. No definitive Jeffrey Maier moment. Again, two points here: One, the ball appeared to skim off the ground on superimposed replays provided by FOX; Two, whether or not you deem his fist-clinching motion as a strikeout, it's clear viewing tape he used the same motion throughout the game for strike calls. At this point, whether or not he verbalized the command is important. The umps not entirely without fault--his mechanics weren't clear. But it was Paul who took everything for granted. And remember, this umpire is relatively new and is trust into the national spotlight. He'll probably never find himself in a game such as this again. His career is in jeopardy. How composed would you expect yourself to be at the podium following a game in which the entire nation believes you cost the Angels a victory? Edited October 13, 200520 yr by Flash Tizzle

There is no way to know that they would have scored in the 10th and the Sox would not have scored.

The call and confusion did not cost the Angels a victory. BIG difference.

Let me ask you...if you're the pitcher...what would you throw Crede in that spot? I know he hung a splitter...but I still would have thrown a breaking ball in the dirt. Crede knew what was coming too after taking two meatballs down the middle.
October 13, 200520 yr It just delayed the inevitable. Crede just would've hit a Walk-Off HR instead of a double off the wall to win us the game. Crede's BA 7th inning and on since Sept 1st: Something like .468.
