January 20, 200620 yr Page 1 of the Sports section in the Cubune announces that Jimmy Piersall, a fourteen-year baseball contributor at the SCORE, will be cut loose. Of course, the speculation is that Jerry Reinsdorf told the station that will carry the Sox to let him go while WSCR insists no such influence was at work. In the article by Ed Sherman the following commentary was offered: "Quite simply, [Harry Carey and Jimmy Piersall] were the best TV duo ever in this town, or any town." Agree or Disagree? January 20, 200620 yr Thank God. I suppose the Score didn't want to hear him kissing Patterson's ass while he's in Baltimore.
January 20, 200620 yr I think Sherman is making a bit of a conspiracy out of nothing. The guy couldn't even remember player's names. I really can't say I felt he said anything meaningful, especially with Stone working for the station.
January 20, 200620 yr I agree. I can't believe they ever called Piersall the Score's baseball "expert".
January 20, 200620 yr QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 01:35 PM) I agree. I can't believe they ever called Piersall the Score's baseball "expert". Only Murph did. Now who will he complain about the Cubs with?
January 20, 200620 yr But the highest high, his partnership with Harry Caray, proved to be legendary. Quite simply, they were the best TV duo ever in this town, or any town. Hired by Bill Veeck at the end of 1976, Piersall was the perfect match for Caray. Both men were irreverent, brutally honest and had tremendous passion for the game. The end result was a wildly entertaining broadcast, complete with cheers and barbs for the Sox. Harry & Jimmy were the best ever--Amen! Jimmy forgot more about baseball than most people know. January 20, 200620 yr QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 04:38 PM) Harry & Jimmy were the best ever--Amen! Jimmy forgot more about baseball than most people know. Maybe, but he HAS forgotten it all. He has a great past ahead of him.
January 21, 200620 yr Excuse me while I wave my happy flag! There are few thiungs in radio that make me change the channel. Mike north is one..... Piersall is the other!!! He is a bumbling FOOL who still lives in 1960.
January 22, 200620 yr QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Jan 21, 2006 -> 11:09 AM) I loved listening to Piersall, I thought he was hysterical... EXACTLY right. he was so damn entertaining and was responsible for many laughs.
January 23, 200620 yr Back in the day, Piersall was really funny as Harry's Sox sidekick. I haven't heard him in years since I moved from the greatest city in the world. Good for Jimmy to remain relevant until the age of 76.
January 23, 200620 yr Piersall was entertaining. For a sport that remembers its past like no other, it was nice to have an old timer around talking about the good old days. If you wanted him to be an expert on today's games, you would be disappointed. If you expected him to speak/outtaof his mind, you were in for a rare treat.
