Jose Contreras's Boston Start

Featured Replies

I think Jose Contreras is hurt and is still pitching because the Sox are in such a tight playoff contest.

His start last night versus Boston was so dominant that during the game I wondered if he received a cortisone injection to mask his pain.

In David Wells's book, Perfect I'm Not, he stated that all of his best-pitched games with Toronto in 2000 came after an injection of cortisone. He called it a miracle drug that allowed him to pitch complete games and do so with great stuff. That's the reason Gord Ash traded him to the Sox after the 2000 season, because he knew why Wells's stats looked so good--information I'm sure he didn't share with Kenny Williams.

In Contreras's last three starts, he's lasted 5, 2 2/3, and 5 IP with 8 strikeouts total. In Boston he went 8 IP with 9 strikeouts.

I think Contreras's was given a cortisone shot because of his injury, recent bad performances, and tight playoff race.

Well, since we're just speculating...

I think he had a Snicker's bar, a bottle of lemon-lime Gatorade, and a Flinstone's vitamin.

He really seems like more of a Twix man.

:P

I'd want to know how many shots he could have over a 30 day period, and how long each shot would last, before speculating.

Wells explained this in his book, stating the effectiveness of the cortisone shot diminishes as shots increase. It got to one point for him where he became virtually immune to it, not feeling the relief he got from every other shot.

I don't know how long each shot lasts, that's something I'm curious to know too, because I want to know how many Contreras will need to get through October.

Butterfinger gives him a crappy grip on his forkball.

Bit-O-Honey.. his fingers nice and sticky for the forkball!!

I'm kinda thinking the same thing...

Different arm angle the last few months, horrible numbers. I'm sure that a lot of this is mental, but it's just dumb to not consider that he's hurt too. Why would you fix something if it's not broken?

What are you talking about... this is all speculation on your part and you make it seem like your 100% sure its true... :bang some things on message boards are just flatout ridiculous.

Ironic isn't it?

well, [insert name of candy bar] gives him [insert bad punchline].

decent speculation based on very little. I don't know why they sometimes disclose that a pitcher got a cortisone shot, and other times they don't, like they apparently did with David Wells.

I think he talked with Dock Ellis before the game

But that's just speculation on my part
