A's moving to Fremont?

Featured Replies

KCBS is reporting that the Athletics will soon announce plans to move the club to Fremont and build a new stadium complex there.

The A's have not yet commented, except to say that they hope to make an official major announcement soon. That could happen when Bud Selig travels to the Bay Area next Tuesday. A move to Fremont would likely result in more money for the A's, as they'd probably have an easier time selling luxury boxes due to the promiximity to San Jose. Fans in Oakland would have a more difficult time supporting their team, but it's proven all too difficult for them as is.

Guess we'll be hearing more on this over the next couple of days.

Dumb question, as my knowledge of California geography isn't very good -- if that's the point, why don't they just move to San Jose then?

Compared to Oakland, San Jose is quite a bit further than Fremont.

Another question, do they become known as the Fremont Athletics of Oakland?

Actually if they were going to go that route it would be the Oakland Athletics of Fremont.

San Jose is in the Giants "territory." The Giants can block the A's from moving there.

I'd imagine they'd remain Oakland. This would basically put them in a spot where they could really draw crowds from two different markets and the San Jose area is still very wealthy (even though San Jose itself is a pretty crappy city) which would help them sell higher price luxury suites.

Technically, Oakland is in "GIants territory", so... shouldnt the Giants be able to veto their existance? Ok, kidding aside, San Jose is FARTHER away from San Fransico than Oakland is. So, to me, it would be better for the GIants. I never understood the whole "territory" thing when it came the Giants. ANy move in that area is a move within their territory. It's just a lateral move.

The Oakland A's have reached a real estate and sponsorship agreement with San Jose-based Cisco Systems to move the team to Fremont and name the ballpark Cisco Field, according to Fremont officials who met with A's owner Lew Wolff today.

Wolff invited the Fremont city council members to attend a public announcement of the deal at Cisco's headquarters on Tuesday, which is expected to include baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.

The deal is contingent on Fremont agreeing to approve a large-scale development plan for the ballpark, homes and shops on the 143-acre parcel west of Interstate 880 in an area known as Pacific Commons. Cisco holds a 34-year lease on the property, which it obtained in 2000 when it thought it would expand its operations there, and has an option to buy it in the next three years.

Wolff, who declined to speak to reporters today, told council members the development would be something like San Jose's Santana Row -- featuring condominiums stacked above street-level retail -- with the major addition of a high-tech ballpark filled with Cisco-produced infrastructure.

``He said this is going to be the most modern, most advanced technological facility in the country,'' said Fremont Councilman Bob Wieckowski, one of four council members who met in individual, private meetings with Wolff.

Council members said Wolff had not decided yet whether to rename the team, but offered ``Fremont A's'' and ``Silicon Valley A's'' as possibilities.

THat ballpark was designed to be built in Oakland north of the A's current home. I wonder if the new home might be differant.

If that move does happen, I have read that they would could be called the Freemont A's or Silicon Valley A's, but as was stated earlier a better name would be the Oakland A's of Freemont. Taking the name Oakland off could be a mistake. They still need to keep idenity with Oakland. The A's don't need to change names as often as the Angels have.
