Ron Washington has only been the Rangers manager since Monday, but he is already making Texas a potentially choice destination for free agents. It will take money to get any deals done, but prize free-agent pitcher Barry Zito has placed the Rangers on his short list as a result of Washington's hire.

Over lunch Wednesday, Washington said: "Barry Zito called me yesterday. He wants to make a visit here. Texas wasn't on his list, but it is now."

Washington also said former A's outfielder Jermaine Dye called with the same message. Dye, however, will not be a free agent until next year, as the Chicago White Sox already picked up his option for 2007.

I dont think we will make a serious offer to resign Dye anyways...

I feel the same way.

I mentioned earlier in the week if we had a legitimate OF prospect to (reasonably) replace Dye, and our CF/SS weren't such liabilities, I'd seriously consider trading him.

Another season of numbers matching 70% of 2006 we're not receiving a good-guy discount from him. He'll have one more big contract remaining in his career, and $7 million will be a joke.

The prospect had better be a can't miss. But he's trade meat at the deadline if the Sox aren't playing well.

I'd imagine at some point during the season, KW might try to re-sign Dye, and if he can't get a deal done, then yeah he could certainly be made available.

Would be interesting if you offered him to teams like the Dodgers, Mets or Angels and could get prospects the caliber of Brandon Wood, Matt Kemp or Lastings Milledge as part of a package for him.

With the only really big bats on the FA Market being Soriano and Lee, and to a lesser extent now JD Drew...and with as many teams looking to add a bat as there are, there are going to be a lot of teams who would be willing to give up a lot for a guy like JD. And this offseason is the ideal time to make that sort of move...coming off a career year, with 1 ungodly cheap year remaining on his contract. Especially with JD's "Freak" injury history before coming to Chicago, which just IMO is another small reason to at least be open to the idea.

A better option would be to resign JD this offseason. Much better. Show the loyalty if we can. But as with the other guys who hit the FA market after 2007, I wouldn't be averse to trading them if we make a genuine attempt to resign them in January and they say no, they want to hit the FA market.

Thus far, it seems like the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Cubs, Astros, Cardinals, Angels, Mariners, Nationals, and maybe a half a dozen other teams could be interested in a power hitting outfielder at JD's price. They sure as hell aren't all going to land Soriano.
