Is there a book out there that would teach my Girlfriend about baseball, i mean the true essence of baseball?

it may get a little too advanced at times, but it goes over EVERYTHING about the game. it's a good read.

What are you looking to "Teach" her? Taking my GF to 10-15 games a season the last two years, and watching a ton with her has really made her a pretty good fan. She knows her stuff.

Yeah, its probably good practice for if you will have children. You have to point out the things in the game, and more and more each time. Evetually you teach the finer points after the learn the basics.

Seriously, you know as much or more than almost any book you're going to find. If you do go to a game and she's bored in the fifth inning, go for a walk around the park, see some of the cool stuff, grab some food away from the seats, then go back. Have her bring a friend.

She knows enough,i want to turn her into a fan...i mean someone who knows about various teams and why things happen on the field..She knows the basics.

I once went to a game with a girl and when the game started, it started with a bunch of foul balls. She says, "I didn't know they gave balls to the fans before the game started."

Some of the Sox wives could maybe teach a few courses for women learning the game for a few bucks........proceeds to White Sox charities.

I think the best thing to do is to watch a lot of games with her. In person and on TV. If she's interested, she'll pick up a lot on her own.

A book is a copout, she wants to learn from you.

 

If she wants to get really heady about it, I suppose you could pick her up a copy of Baseball Between the Numbers or Moneyball, in which case--that's hot.

I disagree. I think it's easier to talk about baseball and answer questions about baseball during a game than any other sport. There are lots of breaks in the action, between every pitch, when you can answer questions and help build an understanding of the game.

 

If you're patient, you can teach her the game while watching lots of games together.

Pretty much anything by Koppett is good. IMHO, one of the best ways to learn about baseball is to know the history. This book is great:

To really learn the game you have to be interested enough to watch it for yourself.My grandmother never watched baseball until the start of the 05 season.She would watch games by herself and no one even knew.Then i noticed her baseball talk started to sound more and more legit.Your girl has to get into baseball by doing it herself, not by some book trying to tell her how great the game is in a nutshell.

I don't know your current life situation, but how would go about teaching a son to love the game and the Sox if you didn't have time for amatuers?

Baseball for Dummies

Do you have any of the '05 post season on tape or DVD? That would be a good thing for her to watch with you now before the season starts. You already know what's going to happen so her questions won't get on your nerves and it would be a good way for her to learn many of the players on the current team. If El Duque, Crede, AJ, PK, Pods, etc... don't make her a fan, nothing will.
