DEM Primaries/Candidates thread

Featured Replies

Despite heavy courting by all the candidates and a lot of rumors that they were leaning towards Edwards, SEIU will not endorse a candidate at the national level.

Staying out of the primary is a victory of sorts for Barack Obama who faced an uphill battle to clinch the SEIU backing; a roadbump for Hillary Clinton and a more significant set-back for John Edwards because he has been working the SEIU stronger than his rivals.

The SEIU went to neutral because there was not enough difference between the pro-union candidates. Each state will be encouraged to make an endorsement. That means it is just a matter of time before the Illinois SEIU announces for Obama and the New York SEIU goes for Clinton. Edwards, I have been told, has an edge in California.

More reason to dislike Thompson. Check out his stance on energy and global warming.

the "O'Spock factor", now on FOX news

Edited by mr_genius

"Untraceable e-mails spread Obama rumor"

When Fox News aired a report in January claiming that Sen. Barack Obama had been educated at a radical Muslim madrassa, his campaign beat the story back — hard — with the candidate himself going on television to call it “ludicrous” and a “smear.”

And his aggressive defense worked, or so it seemed at the time: The notion that Obama has secret Muslim roots faded from the mainstream media, and even from most conservative blogs and magazines.

But rather than vanish, the whispered smear campaign appears to have gone underground, and in its purest form: Obama himself, according to a pair of widely circulated anonymous e-mails, is a Muslim.

Barack Obama: Your grassroots are showing.

I think this is pretty awesome.

I think this is pretty awesome.

Despite his lack of experience, I am actually liking Obama more and more.

East side - interesting choice. Some rough areas, major meth problems, population is significantly minority... probably not a crowd that votes reliably. Maybe that's what he is hoping to foster.

My friend who was a Chicago grassroots organizer for lotsa years in the 90s says that this is the kind of stuff that Obama is known for. His hour of door knocking is obviously a photo op, but I hope he can squeeze in a couple hours of direct voter contact a week. Honestly, it's something every candidate should do.

Most voters would love to punch their ticket for you. You just need to talk to them and ask for it. There's no better way to do so than by knocking on their door.

Anyone see Kucinich on Colbert Report last night?

I was alternately amazed, entertained and confused.

You just have to say Kucinich 3 times into a mirror and the video will appear.

Kucinich, Kucinich, Kucinich.

This is the first poll I've seen in quite some time that has a firm leader in Iowa. Rassmussen showing Hillarity up by 10. The gap narrows to 5 amongst likely Caucus goers.

Obama sure can rake in the money. His campaign sent out an email to supporters yesterday stating that they needed $2.1M in donations to catch up to Hillary's current war chest and whaddya know....1 day later he has over $1M in new donations.

Gotta say, I'm liking Dodd more and more.

“I really don’t know what I would do in my first 100 days,’’ Thompson candidly and conversationally told an audience today. “It would depend on the circumstances."

“But I know what I would do in the first hour,’’ Thompson told an assembly of religious right voters assessing the Republican field of presidential candidates today. “I would go into the Oval Office and close the door and pray for the wisdom to know what is right’’

Hmm yeah, I guess he should be like Obama and just have God tell him what he needs to do, instead of just asking.

It was just another example of him not knowing what he would do or not knowing about an issue. He seems like the least ready candidate in my life time. Why is he even running?

Its funny, he had such a huge opening to hit. The party was just dying for a true conservative with name recognition, because they are all scared to put Giuliani or McCain out there. But so far, Thompson has been a big disappointment to those same conservatives. The people I've talked to who normally vote rightist have all expressed their disappointment - they thought he'd be the right guy to step in, but he's been uninteresting and uninvolved so far (not to mention not raising nearly as much money as they thought he would).

The "conservatives" want a true conservative candidate, who also has name power. No one outside of a select few really gives two craps about the guys in the race now. The two guys leading the race are both guys who are way to centric to satisfy that wing of the party. Thompson gives them name recognition and a record to go with it. Personally I do think you are reading too far into that statement to make it into something else convient. All of the candidates seem to be trying to corner the "one with God" thing. Its rather annoying actually, as if you know anything about Christianity, you aren't supposed to be doing things for recognition, it is supposed to be between you and God.
