Vacation Spots on the East Coast

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I need some help deciding on a good vacation spot on the East Coast for a summer road trip. We need somewhere where people can layout in the sun and do some fishing as well. We also need to find some pet-friendly hotels in the area because we'll be bringing along our 2 small dogs.

Ideally, we'd find a pet friendly hotel with a indoor/outdoor pool near a nice beach, a place to swim, and a place to fish.

We were considering Myrtle Beach, SC and Virginia Beach, VA so far, but I'm open for suggestions from some fellow SoxTalkers. Any help is great, thanks a lot. :headbang

Daytona Beach is awesome if it is you and friends, not so much for family.

New York City is overrated. Atlantic City is dirty.

I like Orlando, Tampa, Ashville, NC. Just to name a few.

Anyway, I haven't been there yet, but Martha's Vineyard fits the description of what you're looking for pretty well. I know it's very pet friendly (lots of dog hotels) because we were looking to go there for a weekend this summer and have that consideration as well.

Stay the hell away from Florida and nobody gets hurt!

:D :D :D

I guess I've had my fill of touristas. :P

retro mentioned Asheville NC, and although it's not coastal I agree with him that is a spectacular area. A few years ago we rented a cute little log cabin for a week about 20 minutes outside of Asheville and it was awesome. Hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains, postcard-perfect trout streams everywhere. That one trip convinced me I could retire there and be a very contented person.

Did I hear trout streams? Sounds intriguing, but we're looking for something more coastal.

You betcha'. We had one flowing right in front of our cabin. I'm not much of a fly fisherman (saving that for my golden years), but there were fishermen in waders with fly rods and nets and hip creels all over the place.

That's obviously an opinion but I absolutely love New York.

Ashville is fantastic and you can see that minor league manager who threw that fit last year! :D

Otherwise: why are you trying to vacation by committee? What kind of man are you?

(Ashville really is fantastic. A friend of mine lives there and says great things about it.)

You're going to suffer paralysis from analysis.

I can finally put a picture to the face!

new york is awesome. i want to go there again next year, just like i went in 2000. in 2000 we didnt see a game at the stadium or at shea, so i want to do that next year. in 00 we went on top of the empire state building and also in the statue of liberty, but not to the torch, b/c that used to close at 1:20 pm. i dont know what the hours are on the statue now

When I went to NYC in December of 2004, the Statue was still closed from 9/11. The closest we were able to get to it was the ferry around the water. However, I remember there being posters, ads, etc. campaigning for them to re-open it to the public. I'm pretty sure that's been the case, and you can go to the top of it again.

Lake George in New York might be a good choice. Fishing and relaxing, and you will probably find pet friendly hotels.

Lake Ana, VA.

The Outer Banks, NC

Allentown, PA (ok, not)

Poconos, PA

to name a few.

So it looks like we're going to go with Myrtle Beach, but we're still not 100% sure. Thank you everyone for the suggestions, and feel free to add more.

Cool. Just be sure to shag like you mean it!*

(In Myrtle Beach, the shag is dancing, not and Austin Powers sex reference.)

I've been there twice, and both times it was out of season. I liked not having massive seasonal crouds to contend with, but a lot of the places just closes down for the winter which sorta stunk.

Enjoy.

Thanks. We found a pet friendly resort right on the beach for 133 a night. 2 bedrooms, 1/2 kitchen, 2 baths, and 3 queen beds. Pretty solid if you ask me. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Hilton Head is awesome. I went there for Spring Break two years ago and had a great time. That would have been my suggestion too, but Myrtle Beach is great from what I hear.
