January 18, 200818 yr White Sox third baseman Joe Crede agreed Thursday to a one-year, $5.1 million contract that allowed him to earn an additional $300,000 in performance bonuses. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/cs-08...1,1333942.story
January 18, 200818 yr This is Joe Crede signing a contract to avoid arbitration. Not Joe Crede signing a contract extension. Please for God's sake someone make that clear in the thread title.
January 18, 200818 yr This doesn't change anything - the White Sox still have 2 3B, and one, most likely Joe Crede, won't be here by the start of the season. He was going to have to sign a deal for next season at some point....
January 18, 200818 yr yawn.....thats about what he woulda gotten in arb. anyways....i guess we avoid the mess of an arb hearing....i hope he has a good spring so we can get something more than a michael dubee type player for him\ on a side note...maybe i just hate change, but i dislike the new chicagosports.com Edited January 18, 200818 yr by daa84
January 18, 200818 yr So that's Crede and Uribe making a combined $9.6M this season. That's not a very good use of resources is it. Ideally, they'd both be off the 25 man roster before the first game of the season in April, but my guess is 1 (probably Uribe) will be on the bench to start the season.
January 18, 200818 yr Author mods, please change the title, i heard it was an extension. sorry about the uninformed title
January 18, 200818 yr QUOTE(BurlyMan56 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 06:54 PM) mods, please change the title, i heard it was an extension. sorry about the uninformed title Technically it is an extension. But it's not the kind of extension that would send this place into a frenzy - a multi year one. His contract was extended 1 year, which everyone expected as a means of avoiding arbitration. A multi year extension for Crede would mean that we have 2 3rd basemen locked up for the long term, which would mean that we'd be trading Fields immediately.
January 18, 200818 yr So that's a $160,000 raise from last year with an opportunity to make an additional 300K sounds about right to me. This is a perfect example of how things work during a good player's arbitration eligible seasons, no matter how s***ty you play you'll almost never be forced to take a paycut in the 2nd or 3rd year of arb.

Agreed, and the Uribe situation continues to baffle and irritate me. Nobody wants the guy because he's not very good....except the White Sox at the time, who have to regret that decision.

Looking on the bright side, we can actually have the expectation that the team will have $10 million in salary to spend on FA's next offseason. And you could easily up that number considerably if you were able to move Contreras.

January 18, 200818 yr Hey, if we could free up close to 30 million after 08, we could have a shot at signing Sabathia, or to a lesser (but risker) extent Sheets.

January 18, 200818 yr Oh, you bet your ass KW is going after one of those premier starters. Hes probably already budgeting for it. The question is, will we get one?
January 18, 200818 yr Yeah right, I love the sox are gonna sign a big name FA pitcher talk. The sox had a hard time giving their own workhorse 4 years and they refuse to give anything but 3 to every one else. What premier FA pitcher is looking for 3 years, try 5 Minumum. The sox take themselves out of the market before they even get there.

The question is, will we get one? No way unless Kenny decides to offer at least 5 years, if not more, which some other teams would because free agency makes teams stupid.
