SOS numbers are pretty misleading, because when you play teams that are like 1-11 at that point in the season it totally takes away from a great team you played.
I think it also takes into account the records of your opponents - opponents. So the 1-11 would also depend on the quality of teams they lost to, as to how much it would bring you down. I don't put too much into it though, just something to respond to debates such as "who has team A played compared to team B" type of discussions that people have.

I will bring it up to a IU fan that last Sunday during our poker leauge was going off about Carolina losing to Maryland and saying that UNC hasn't played anybody and gets all this love while Indiana with one loss gets no credit after a much tougher schedule. Reality never gets in the way of some fans.

The 05 Carolina team was significantly better on the defensive end than this years version. That years version was top 10 in defensive efficiency. This team isn't top 40.

I agree, but they were ripped for being soft on DEE. This years squad must show improvement, like the national championship team did in that area. They need a few more things to improve as well, but they are capable, hopefully they will get it done by tourney time.

FWIW:

Non Conf SOS: Memphis - #35

UCLA- #132

Kansas #119

UNC - #52

don't forget that Memphis still has Gonzaga AND Tenn left as non-conf games as well

But they have that pathetic conference remaining as well, so they will fall while Kansas rises in difficulty. UCLA, UNC will stay strong or rise overall as well.

Exactly, it's just something to measure success with since it's pretty simple...however I like to look at the actual teams played and compare those than the numbers. Looking at Memphis' non-conference schedule compared to Kansas' and it's really not even close, no matter the numbers.

Pretty funny about that fan in your poker league. Indiana homer? Sounds like it, considering he fails to bring up the fact that out of the 1 decently average team they've played they lost by 15. The rest of their schedule has been an absolute joke. Not saying they're not legit, because I think they're top 20, but using that as the main argument is laughable.

The new strength of schedule numbers came out today. The teams of intrest in the last few discussions that are highly ranked are as follows.

North Carolina #10 toughest schedule (19-1)

UCLA #16 toughest schedule (16-2)

Kansas #41 toughest schedule (18-0)

Memphis #54 toughest schedule (18-0)

and a surprise to me - Indiana #152 toughest schedule (17-1)

Tennesee at (15-2 )has the #3 toughest schedule to date.

and for the So. Illinois fans you might be (9-10), but it has been against quality #6 toughest to date.

Illinois #21 toughest at (9-11)

Link?

We're not good, but I would imagine DePaul has a top-20 SOS.
