For what it's worth, here's what I'd do: Stick Crede at third and Anderson in center, purely for their stellar defense early in the season, when the weather will make homers scarce and defense imperative. I'd stick Fields at second and deal with his poor range and hope that Joey Cora can teach him to turn a double play in short order. I'd stick Swisher in left and bat him leadoff, but freely insert Owens -- with Swisher, Paul Konerko, or Jim Thome sitting -- depending on the weather conditions and the pitching matchup.

I love the fact that members of Crede's crew keep shuffling around players to fit a guy who is not all that good, just came off a bad back, and is a Boras FA. It appears teams like the Giants just want us to give Joe to them for free. There is no difference between free and someone with no big league experience or just middle of the road minor league average. I would want to see a real return for either Crede or Fields. I think this team can use both and both have futures with the Sox, if the Sox try and sign Crede.

Here is the problem. For some reason, there is a group that holds Crede and Fields in the same group value wise, which is far from the case. On the open market,

Exactly, it's time to come to the reality that no team should have much reason for wanting Crede.

 

He's no youngster and he's shown nothing with the bat lately. All that makes his defense a luxury most teams are going to do without. On TOP of all that, his contract status.

Well, his range is such that even if his other qualities out of the 2B slot were all-star caliber, he'd still be a below average defender overall. He could have the best accuracy in the league on throws to second off of double play balls, throws to 3rd and home off of relays, etc, but his horrific range would cancel all of that out.

You need stellar defense out of the C, CF, and SS slots, and to a lesser extent, out of the 3B and 2B slots. You hide guys like Josh in LF, RF, and 1B. I'll never understand why we'd acquire Nick Swisher when we have Konerko/Thome/Dye/Fields. How many subpar defenders can you afford to take on, especially with Danks/Contreras/Floyd as your 3-4-5? LOL.

He is coming off an injury, and is going to provide no compensation as a type A or B free agent. We have someone waiting in the wings to take over, and his name is Josh. You dont need more players waiting in the wings, when you have a number 1 draft pick you feel high about ready to take over.

They should have tried him at 2B last year. He probably would be a better 2B than LF, they could have seen if he would be at least adequate, but it is too late now.

Acquiring Swisher means that we can't move Fields to left. That's why I didn't understand the move. Now, if they'd have gotten rid of Dye, or traded Fields, I'd have been fine with it. Having all three w/ two corner OF slots available is kinda stupid, though.

That would be fine by me.

IMO AJ has good awareness to do things like blocking the ball in the dirt but he's got no zip on those throws to 2nd at all most of the time. Overall he is a pretty average defender, nothing special. He's a good contact hitter when he WANTS to be, there are times when I want to high-five him for putting the ball in play when that's all he had to do to keep a rally going and there are times when I want to pull a Michael Barrett on him after he strikes out on that annoying "arrrghhhh please let me hit a homer oh whoops" uppercut swing. The only one on this team that should be doing that is Thome.
