Hey look, idiots!

It's pretty much the natural outgrowth of the anti-Mosque movements the Right is feeding around the country.

This isn't new - there was fear in this country after 9/11, and shortly after, a significant portion of "the Right" decided that using fear was a great way to get support. So, fearmongering became a major tenet of their marketing scheme. Cheney led the way. And the fear train continues to plow forward.

It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Slate did an article not too long ago about how this type of hyperventilation and overreaction plays right into the hands of Islamic propaganda and helps make their points for them (which would otherwise be bulls*** points).

And look, it works against other groups too.

So, Soxbadger says I'm a racist, and you say I'm fearmongering. Fantastic. I somehow knew you'd try for this ridiculous leap.

If you bothered to actually read my posts, I told you why I felt the way I did, and it has zero to do with either fearmongering or racism. But feel free to continue ignorning that and painting me into a corner.

You didn't start that thread, and you didn't start the 14th amendment discussion.

Do you think we'd be having this discussion at all if having people afraid of Hispanic people wasn't an effective electoral strategy?

i thought George Bush did a good job post-9/11 of reaching out to Americans who are Muslim. It's certainly taken a turn for the worse lately.

This is very true actually. If it wasnt for SB 1070, there would be very few people even thinking about this kind of possibility today.

I give you bonus points for this post, sir. I'm glad you recognize this. Just as I'll recognize the idiocy of the far right on this one.

With that said... the only reason they are building that mosque near GZ is to start exactly what this is starting and NO other reason.

There's been a mosque 4 blocks from ground zero since before the WTC was constructed. There are 3 gay bars closer to ground zero than this cultural center.

So? They want to build a xx story humongous building and have it funded with what will end up being 9 figures at least? It's an attention scam and nothing more...

They're taking over the building of a vacant Burlington Coat Factory.

And demoloshing it, and taking what will end up being hundreds of millions and turning it into a religious attention whore. THAT location is muslireligous in nature, after all. Sacred ground and all.

I'm sure now I'm a scared anti-Muslim freak now. rolly.gif

How far away is appropriate? Does your offense decline linearly or exponentially with distance?

Personally, I don't care. But I also realize that the whole thing is a publicity stunt.

Frankly...if it is (and you've left me unconvinced)...I can think of few better publicity stunts than to have an Islamic Center on that site, in proving that this country actually believes the words that it wrote in its founding documents. Because this country should be a better place than to think it's a bad thing that they're there.

lol, I just saw one of those Facebook polls that said "should we build a Mosque and Islamic Supercenter at Ground Zero?" with a picture of Osama bin Laden on it.

Well no s***, what kind of asshole would answer "yes" to that question when you phrase it all distorted like that? I hate those polls, the only reason I don't block them off my profile is because I like looking at them and going "I hate these polls." Another stupid one I saw last year was "Should the Obama Administration shut down Fox News?"

Well, it is the same amendment...

They might be building it in Lower Manhattan because its cheaper there than elsewhere in the borough.

Funny, a poll came out today talking about how people view Cordoba House in New York City. The top line is more people in NYC are against it than for it. But in Manhattan, the borough of the city that has to live with it, that borough approves of it - 53 to 31.

Breakdown by borough on page 7.

Did I miss the gay bombing run on the WTC? What does that have to do with anything?

If opinion polls are the standard, no one here should be complaining about Arizona then.

Judge Walker has ended his stay in the California Prop 8 appeal case, and at least until a higher court acts...gay marriage is now legal again in California.

Edit: he has scheduled the lifting of his stay for August 18th, giving the 9th circuit time to step in if it so chooses.
