Dick Allen Posted July 24, 2008 Share Posted July 24, 2008 From espn.com Jarrod Washburn, who has an ERA of 2.65 in his last eight starts, is reportedly drawing interest from the Yankees, Cardinals, White Sox, and possibly the Brewers. The New York Yankees appear to be the most interested party, however Washburn has a limited no-trade clause which allows him to veto a trade to the Bronx. Although he told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that "I love it here in Seattle," he did concede that he loves to win and would "strongly consider (waiving his veto) if it came to me." The question I continue to ask regarding pitchers we're rumored to be interested in is are they better than what we have in AAA or bullpen right now? In the case of Washburn, I say no, I don't think he's so much better than the other options we have that I'd be willing to take on his contract and part with a prospect to get him. If I was the M's, I'd probably take a lesser prospect to be able to dump Jose Vidro also (if his contract still goes after the season). On the other hand, the Yankees are willing to take on the bulk of the money still owed to Washburn for the rest of this year and next year, but they have no intention of including anything more than a marginal prospect in the deal. Washburn's overall numbers are not good: 5-9 with a 4.50 ERA. But he has thrown better the past two months, compiling a 2.93 ERA in June and 2.67 in July; one advance scout said that Washburn has been using his splitter more in the past two months. The Yankees did not have a scout in Toronto Sunday to watch Washburn, who had a strong eight-inning outing against the Jays, because they have seen him enough to make an evaluation and maintain their current stance in negotiations. Some executives with other teams are surprised the Mariners, whose roster is loaded with high-priced veterans at a time when the team is apparently in the opening stages of a rebuilding period, are not jumping on the Yankees' offer to assume the contract of Washburn, who is 23-38 in his three seasons with Seattle and had an ERA of 6.99 through May 21 of this season.
