"Mild Strain of ACL" "X-rays Negative" -- That may be the only good news on this very s***ty day.

MRI tomorrow however. What do we take from the fact they're calling this 'mild' ? My rule of thumb is always - cant walk off = very bad.

I dont know, but "mild strain" certainly sounds better than "tear." Also, was it ACL or MCL? I have a cold and my ears are all messed.

It was definitely the inside of his right knee. Where's ptatc to tell us about what ligament that is?

Unfortunately, I was at my son's football game and I didn't see it. The Medial collateral ligament is the one on the inside of the knee. If it just went to the side, it is probably isolated there. If there was a twist involved also it could be the Anterior Cruciate and the menisci as well. It doesn't sound good from reading the posts here.

Call me crazy if people know better, but i'm pretty sure that the only way you're going to tell the difference between a sprain and a partially/fully torn ligament is with the MRI.

In football they always say strain the day of and then reveal tear a day later after mri.

Technically, if it's a tendon/ligament, it's a sprain. A strain is a pull/tearing of a muscle.

ya....im far from an expert as well but i have some basic experience with MRI and Xray and they wont be able to tell too much without an MRI

I heard MCL.

I'm pretty sure they said MCL, not ACL.

Swish at 1st, Grif in left?

I think Swish is definitely the better outfielder between the two. Of course, he's also the better 1B, so if Griffey can't play 1B very well, I guess Swish should be at 1B.

Yeah, nothing looked "mild" about his grimacing when he was down or how he was carried off.

X rays are typically only able to see the hard parts within a body (aka bones). they can't for the most part make out the softer tissues, although there are newer, higher radiation x rays coming on line that can do so. The MRI is much better at imaging softer parts.

btw...you guys make good points about killing danks and floyd with a 4 man rotation....in terms of the Poreda stuff, all i heard was some speculation from our favorite carpet bomber about poreda potentially starting on saturday

Yes, but I misheard. It was MCL

A lot of times with these injuries, they are painful as hell when they first happen. If it turns out it is just a mild strain of the MCL, there is a good chance we could see PK back within a couple of weeks. If it turns out it is more severe then a strain or is an ACL injury, then PK's done for the season.

Here's the problem. A mild sprain could easily take 3 weeks to heal, especially on a body that's 30+ years old and has a decent amount of mass on it. Even a mild sprain and that's probably the season for him.

If it's a mild strain though, he has a shot at returning for at least the final push or maybe even the playoffs. Anything else though, and his season is done.

Right now though, I just hope he is back for ST next year.

After seeing that, I find it hard to believe thats a strain...I say Paulie is done for the year.

Are we done for the season?

No. But a lot of people need to step up for us not to be. A whole lot.

Hopefully it's not like the definition Halas Hall uses, for a "knee sprain." Remember a few years ago when that was basically the Bears saying "Player X tore his ACL and is out for the season?"

as i said in the gamethread, the nationals could hang within 1 game of the angels over the course of 18 games, so i dont think we are done, but it doesnt look good

Until you do the MRI, there's no way to tell the difference between those 2 cases.

Man...a month and a half ago people would have been ecstatic with this...haha...well maybe not ecstatic but happy none the less.....

if Paulie said he'd be surprised if he wasn't back in a few days thats pretty good...means he has to be walking almost normally on it...hopefully only a week here

A sprain is an injured ligament. A strain is an injured muscle/tendon.
