The Video Rental Thread

Featured Replies

Since we have a great films thread, I thought a companion thread would be interesting for the home crowd.

I just watched Hollywood Shuffle last night, very funny in a retro sort of way. Great social commentary from a not too distant past in Hollywood and the roles that were available for black actors. Watch for Wayans in what is probably his first big movie.

Now that you bring it up,me and friend were talking about how much we miss the days when we would go to the mom and pop video rental place. There was a anticipation before you got there because you never knew what movie you would be able to get.Sometimes you wouldnt be able to get anything good but sometimes you would hit the jackpot and get 5 movies that just came out and it would be like striking gold.Nowadays I get everything so easy through Netflix or Blockbuster has like 100 copies of every piece of s*** movie so the convienence has taken the fun out of the experience.

I often pretty much do the same thing with On Demand. I'll flip through all of the listings, and I'll usually just pick movies that fall into two categories.

1.) Movies that were way before my time that are known to be among the best (Spartacus, etc.)

2.) Movies that I remember seeing previews for, and might've seen in theatres, but missed for some reason (most recently, In Bruges and The Condemned).

I love the classic comedies. If all else fails, you can always throw in a Mel Brooks or Kevin Smith movie, along with a few other cult classics.

I've thought about this many times. I'm 23 and grew up through the transition from mom-and-pop video stores to a monopoly of Hollywood Video/Blockbuster/Netflix.

Before my family moved to Palos we lived off 63rd and Lawndale in Chicago. Within half a mile of where we lived there were six family owned video stores. One of my earliest memories is riding with my brother to every single video store looking for Super Mario Brothers 3 on NES, and when we found one, kept it for a good two months because we continued renting it over and over. Of course, none are around today. And two of the video stores were typical of past businesses in Chicago where someone lived above the actual store. Definitely won't find those around here, anymore.

To address the actual thread, I recommend everyone here rent "Once Were Warriors" if it's available at your store. It's the best movie you've never seen. Another is "Session 9" if you're into horror movies. Most video stores should have this title.

I actually live in the apartment complex that was built there.

Haha, that's awesome.

Looks nice from the frontal view available on wikipedia. Although I'm guessing those are for the $1925/month "Capotes." Your ass is probably in one of those "Austen Lofts"

I remember when I was a kid wanting to go to the 18 and over only section...not because I knew what was in there (or would have understood even if I did know), but because it seemed like one of those "forbidden" places.

A couple of movies I pull out when there is nothing else on....

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

and The Warriors

two totally different movies but i gotta watch both from beginning to end.

i guess you can add Escape from New York on that list as well.

Steve made me think about it the other day,

Outside Providence

Also, I could do a Godzilla/Gamera marathon at any time

If you haven't seen them, a few of Billy Wilder's classics are about as good as film can get.

Stalag 17

Sunset Boulevard

Double Indemnity

The Apartment

I thoroughly enjoy all of the above, and of couse "Some Like It Hot" is quite good, and probably Wilder's most famous.

Is this the movie with Simon Baker from the show "The Mentalist"?

edit: N/M, that was Sunset Strip

I'm talking about the one made in 1950, so let me just say, "I doubt it".

William Holden is the star in this and in Stalag 17 and Sabrina (Wilder liked him). I really like him as an actor, but I think he got heavily into alcohol and drugs shortly after this film, which unfortunately effected his career and the world's view of him.

EDIT: I see your edit. Gotchya. Seriously, check out the four films above. They are very entertaining.

I had to look up the floor plan to see which one you were talking about. Ha, our place is bigger than those ones.
