Cantu's everythign we don't need: poor defensive corner infielder; slow; good power but low OBP. Exactly what we're trying to move away from.

Yet still Cantu is an improvement over Fields in my mind. Fields will not be stellar defensively either. Cantu would be much more consistent and strike out less. I hope Viciedo can pull an Alexei and start at 3rd. If you can get Cantu for Armstrong, I think you gotta do it.

It's different because like you said he didnt play a full season and showed a scary in-ability to hit RHP (.213/.284/.393). He's also not shown the ability to hit a good fastball yet. I don't think for a second management would be comfortable going with Fields at 3B next season which is probably why Betemit was acquired and are at least kicking the tires on Cantu.

I realized in '07 Fields had his flaws. But he showed more than enough that season that he should be given the chance not only to prove 2008 was nothing more than an unfortunate injury-riddled year, but that he's also made the necessary adjustments to be a better all-around hitter. If Cantu is an upgrade, it'd be a minimal upgrade at best. Pass.

Unless of course he reverts back to his 2006 performance level when he was one of the least valuable players in the game and spent some time in the minors. Hell, the Reds released him in December of '07 after acquiring him midseason (for a package of crap) because they didn't think he was worth the $1M+ it would have taken to retain him in arbitration. Personally, I don't think much of Jorge Cantu. He's one of the absolute worst defenders I've ever seen in my life at any position, he really does make Josh Fields look good. He's a toy baseball player because aside from his decent gap power he possess no other tools.

If I'm the Marlins and I can get a young left handed catcher with decent power potential who's never played a game above AAA for Jorge Cantu, I jump at it.
