December 12, 200817 yr According to MLB.com's Scott Merkin, the White Sox avoided arbitration with outfielder DeWayne Wise, signing him for $550K.
December 12, 200817 yr Wasn't $1M as some were speculating. Pretty decent signing for a 4th/5th OF. Good clubhouse guy who can hit at the top or bottom of the order, you could do worse for a 5th OF based on 2008.

December 12, 200817 yr Good. He's one of those guys who figured something out at age 30 about hitting. Also the only guy on the team with a track record for picking up a bat and going in there cold to PH Edited December 12, 200817 yr by Princess Dye
December 12, 200817 yr He shouldnt even be on this team. He is a good mid season filler, but if you go into the season with Wise on your roster you are in deep trouble.
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:17 PM) He shouldnt even be on this team. He is a good mid season filler, but if you go into the season with Wise on your roster you are in deep trouble. He's a 5th OF. No matter how bad he performs, I doubt we are in "deep trouble" because of how he performs.
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:36 PM) He's a 5th OF. No matter how bad he performs, I doubt we are in "deep trouble" because of how he performs. Who are the #3 and #4 outfielders ahead of him?
December 12, 200817 yr I have little problem with this. It's now down to him and Owens for the starting CF job.
December 12, 200817 yr I think that is a WISE move to sign Dewayne WISE. He has speed and showed some clutch hitting and also is a decent OF'er. Very much worth the money
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 09:39 PM) Who are the #3 and #4 outfielders ahead of him? I have no idea, but unless you really expect him to be starting come April 1st, the point still holds.
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:40 PM) I have little problem with this. It's now down to him and Owens for the starting CF job. Interesting that you say that, but I don't think he will be the starting CF'er. I also don't think the Sox are seeing him as a starter, but I suppose anything can happen.

December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) Interesting that you say that, but I don't think he will be the starting CF'er. I also don't think the Sox are seeing him as a starter, but I suppose anything can happen. If/when Owens gets hurt in ST, he will wind up being our everyday CF. We all know this, so we may as well just admit it.
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) Who are the #3 and #4 outfielders ahead of him? At present, Anderson and Owens technically should be. But we all know where Anderson will actually sit.
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:44 PM) If/when Owens gets hurt in ST, he will wind up being our everyday CF. We all know this, so we may as well just admit it. In a division loaded with major CF talent it's a shame that this guy will probably wind up playing a lot of games out there for us.

December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) Agreed. Only the Sox can have Minor League journeymen start a playoff game. Have you guys looked at the Twins roster the last few years? Nick Punto? Anyone? Anyone?
December 12, 200817 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 06:09 PM) Have you guys looked at the Twins roster the last few years? Nick Punto? Anyone? Anyone? How dare you call me out on my massive generalization / Nick Punto, grinder that he is, is a terrible baseball player.
December 13, 200817 yr Not a bad deal. He's a decent bench guy and good clubhouse guy. That's pretty much what you want from a 5th OF. I just hope Ozzie doesn't think he's an everyday player.
