Doesnt he get McDonalds for free for doing those commercials a couple years ago? Bobby has earned this pay more than anybody... 2 Division championships, 1 League championship and 1 World Series Championship to go along with his 117 Saves in 133 save oppurtunities an impressive 88% career save percentage.

It's exactly what I figured he'd get. If you go year to year with a player in arbitration you're going to end up paying more than if you just buy them all out with a multi-year deal. The Sox trade a few million dollars for the security of one year contracts rather than Jenks giving up a few million for the security of $20M+ guaranteed.

$5.5M is right where he deserved to be paid. If Jenks comes through with an excellent 2009 season he's looking at the possibility of 8 figures in his second year of arbitration. There's really no modern day precedent for what Jenks is doing. A 28 year old going into his 5th year in the league (but only 4 years of service time) and second year of arbitration who's been one of the best closers in the game since the get go? That doesn't happen. If he stays healthy and produces he'll be a very rich man even before he hits free agency.

I have him at $5.2M, Jenks is about to get real expensive, real quick.

Closers in their first year of arbitration:

2008: Huston Street - $3.3M (coming off an injury, rather average closer for the first 3 years of his career)

2007: Chad Cordero - $4.15M (2 years previous as a full time closer, dominant in 2005, very good in 2006)

2006: Brad Lidge - $3.975M (1.5 years previous as a closer, one of the most dominant setup men in the game previously)

2006: Francisco Rodriguez - $3.75M (coming off first year as a full time closer, one of the most dominant setup men in the game previously)

Highest # ever for first time eligible closers... although Papelbon will assuredly pass that soon.

Just for the excitement of it? Cause he gets just as many saves and outs without doing that ya know.

Yep, like in the next few days. Jenks' agent and Rick Haun just set the precedent for Papelbon's deal since they're both arbitration eligible for the first time this season and Papelbon has been the more dominant pitcher.

Bobby is getting expensive, but he is well worth it. We haven't had a consistent closer year to year since Foulke which was a long time ago. It's good knowing going into the 9th with a lead we are pretty much sure a W.

Stark says it's worth $5.6M. Link

ok now keep kicking ass bobby.

Good for Bobby. He's done a great job making the transition from thrower to pitcher. Keep getting it done kid.

I, uh... respectfully disagree.

By...ignoring statistics? Whatever floats your boat I guess, but I'd rather have a 95mph Bobby with lower stats in every category but SO and S's than the 100mph version.

Does he, uh....not get outs and saves anymore? Because I, uh....missed that.

last year-30 saves, 07-40 saves, 06-41 saves

This is probably a known fact, but how many years or arbitration does a player have before he is a FA? 2?

3. Unless you're a Super Two player then it's 4.

Usually 3 full seasons (six total) but there are some "Super2" players...there's a formula for determining that which I don't care to look up amidst all the euphoria of Inauguration Day.

I rather see 100mph Bobby as well for reasons already discussed. Search for it in the trade Bobby discussion.

Papelbon got $6.25M

That's about right. And the Red Sox are wise, just as the Sox are, taking it year by year with an injury prone closer.
