5th Starter Scenarios

Logic, in the sense of the formal study of it, deals more so in absolutes than in probabilities.

You guys are talking about two different things here.

Greg is discussing formal logic, the rest of the board is using the word logic more in every day usage of the word.

Either way, it's not worth getting nasty about.

I guess you still want to discuss this.

Logic 101

Your comment: Wise should absolutely NEVER bat late in a game.

My comment: Wise got a walk off hit against the Yankees, obviously late in a game.

Conclusion: Wise can effectively bat late in a game. His hit proved that.

If that's not logic what would you call it? I'm not flaming, just curious.

I think in a debate, I might win.

I never said he should be allowed to bat late every time. Obviously we have better candidates to deliver a hit, on paper at least.

If you put me up there in the 9th inning, I could eventually get a hit. I'm not saying I'd be good at it, but one time out of a million chances? Sure, I could get a hit. Does that mean I should be up in late inning situations?

Fact of the matter is that players don't miraculously get better late in the game just because they have some magic clutch gene. It doesn't exist. Good players do well late in the game, bad players do poorly in those same situations. DeWayne Wise is simply a bad player. Just because he got a hit in a late inning situation once (or twice, or three times.. f***, even ten times) doesn't mean he's a good option to have up late in the game and especially doesn't mean he "should" be up late in the game.

If you don't understand this, then I'm sorry but there's nothing I (or anyone else) can do for you.

Exactly.

This is what I was (am) trying to do in standing up for Wise in this matter.

You are still just arguing in a stubborn manner. Everybody knows that Wise is the last person that should be up in a late inning situation.

Wise had a big hit in the playoffs last year, had a gamewinning hit vs the Yankees this year, had an important catch to preserve a victory (and injure his shoulder), and had a The Catch during the perfect game.

He has done some good things in very important situations. Whether or not clutchness is a special skill, he has some track record for coming through in big moments....other guys are known for doing it only when it doesnt matter.

Since Wise is the opposite I'm fine with him being a backup outfielder. He can PH and PR pretty darn well, and has now earned respect for his glove. I'm not going to be like one of these posters that expects the 25th man to play as well as a starter, and if it doesnt happen he gets all huffy about it.

I no longer going to overstate the guy's abilities, but he's fine as a backup. Grabbing a bat cold and pinch hitting, that unquestionably is a skill that only some have. Last yr he was our best PH i believe.

I'd prefer to have a 12 man pen, rather then sacrifice a spot to keep D-Wheezey on the roster.

His line in innings 7-9 is .210/.249/.406.

His line in late and close situations is .209/.233/.372.

He is actually somehow worse than he usually is when put in "big moments".
