The University has very close ties the Seminole Nation and I feel if they felt 'The Chop' was degrading, they wouldn't be so supportive of the University's use of their namesake.

A majority of the Seminole Nation is gone from Florida.

I always said if the Redskins is an appropriate name then the Cowboys should have their name changed to the Palefaces. Just have the Redskins vs. the Palesfaces on Monday night football.

 

The other one that I have a major problem with is the bright red toothy Indian logo used by the Cleveland baseball franchise. If Norte Dame had a rosey cheeked/nosed drunkard as their logo for the fightin' Irish as opposed to a fictional creature who protects his pot o' gold, then I think the logo may be a problem for most Irish as well .

I'd say "Redskins" is the only nickname that is offensive in its own right. If you replace red with white or brown or black or change it to "slant eyes," it's obviously offensive. The tribal names like Illini or Seminoles seem OK to me...more like state pride than anything. I can see where people might get offended at war-like references to the tribes, but sports are the equivalent of "battles" in modern day. I'm not sure it is a blanket statement about tribal culture.

There's only three things that I'd get rid of:

 

• The term "Redskins".
• The Tomahawk Chop.
• And the Smiling Cleveland Indians logo.

I love when people tell others who are affected by the subject not to be affected because it's not a big deal. The seminoles are very close to FSU and have supported that. No big deal. The redskins? give me a break with that name. Does it offend me? No, I don't really have any ties to it, so why should I be making the decision or getting upset, because I'm used to the name on the nfl schedule? What a joke of a logic.

It seems a strange honor when often times the dances, chops, etc are used to help the team score or stop the other team from scoring. So I find the honor argument rather weak. I think the level of the offensive material also needs to be evaluated. Unlike some magazine or movie that can be shrink wrapped and tucked away behind the counter, these teams receive major television, radio, newspaper, and internet time. I see a time when teams will have entire websites with thousands of fans and millions of posts. So the whole minority/majority argument starts to lose steam.

 

I think we have over reacted in some cases. But I usually

 

take not offending over offending

Taking stopping something negative over doing something negative

 

In most of these cases the cure may be bitter tasting for a moment, but it is over quickly and soon forgotten.

FYI, UND is still the Fightin Sioux, and the Lakota Tribe (their real name) HATES it. But the multi-millionaire who financed their recent arena put the Sioux logo on every seat in the building, so it'd be a nightmare to change it and have to replace every seat (plus other things) in the building.

And at this point I believe that a team like "home-bashers" would never fly because the majority of people think its offensive and unprofessional, despite their view on homosexuality in general.

 

Edit: And really the Court shouldn't be in the business of this anyway. I mean, the Constitution was aimed at Federal and State actions, not private actions. If a franchise wants to be the homo-bashers, they should be able to. But now that these organizations have gotten so big, at some point, they've been linked to state/federal action.
