What kind of package do you think KC could get for him this offseason with no extension or with a window for a team to extend? Obviously his 09 was crazy good, something like a 205 ERA+. He has started 145 + innings 5 times. First time was exactly 145 innings when he was 20, and if memory serves me right they were actively monitoring his innings. He followed that up with a terrible '05 and I believe that's when he went on his leave to deal with anxiety. He has had strong years in 07 and 08, although only 122 IPs in 07, but nothing crazy and this year he has been OK, but not as good as 08 and certainly not close to 09.

hmmm, I would pass if I was a team and he's asking for that at this point.

You can make some legit complaints about keeping guys in the minors for too long...but really, there's a lot to like with how they've operated this season.

They signed guys who blocked their young players...then dealt those guys for additional youth

 

They held onto the guys under their control and waited for a great offer (Which they didn't get).

 

Legitimately they need to start looking to move Greinke this offseason or next season.

Sometimes it never does. Sometimes guys bust, sometimes you waste draft picks, sometimes you have the wrong people in your org...but sometimes, you do what the Rays did in 2008 and totally bust out of it.

 

There's still a ways to go there in KC to get the system legitimately built up into something that can sustain itself for a while.

They haven't had a good farm system every year. They might be starting to get closer.

I'll tell you what, I have no idea why teams like the Royals don't stock up on veteran relievers in the offseason, even if they have to overpay a little. As long as the deals are for one year, these guys are easy to move at the deadline and if they're performing well, can give you quite a haul.

 

The Pirates' signing of Octavio Dotel is a perfect example.
