August 23, 201015 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 08:11 PM) You don't want to wind up where the Rays/White Sox are this year on the DH spot though where they're pulling out random, nearly washed up people from minor league deals to fill their DH slot. It'd be nice to have a tryout first. Hawpe is a random nearly washed up person. The dude is being released while owed a decent amount of cash. Spring training is the time for "tryouts" not during a pennant race. Edited August 23, 201015 yr by Dick Allen

Sure he had a bad contract, and he was edged out in Colorado by younger players who also play much better defense. But I think it's just a down season. He's had an OPS+ over 100 every season since '05. He's been a good bet for an OBP over .380 and a SLG over .500 every year. He's only 31 years old. And his career road line is .274/.369/.471. Not as good as at Coors, but still respectable. He's been pretty bad this year, but I think he will rebound nicely- if not this fall then next year. I certainly don't think he will be had for a minor league deal, as was speculated here.

If he's clearing waivers, being cut, and not being immediately grabbed, then a minor league contract is entirely plausible. At best maybe a Freddy Garcia, 1 year with an option deal.

If he doesn't sign anything right now that includes an option for '11, I think some team will give him a major league deal in the off season. Edited August 23, 201015 yr by Buehrlesque

If he doesn't sign anything right now that includes an option for '10, I think some team will give him a major league deal in the off season. I could see it happening sure, but if he doesn't do jack in September, it's going to be non-guaranteed somehow.
August 24, 201015 yr Author Wow. SI_JonHeyman: hearing brad hawpe was released. man, that was a quick fall.
August 24, 201015 yr Hawpe would be a good pick up for us for the minimum. He can't field at all (Adam Dunn kind of bad), but he should be able to hit a lot better than Mark Kotsay.

I would think Kenny would tell Hawpe that we would make him an offer if we don't get Manny first.
