June 13, 201114 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2011 -> 12:23 PM) Dodgers owe Manroid a payment of $8.33 million by the end of this month. Selig wants him to default.
June 13, 201114 yr No one should be surprised since baseball practices the same failed economics by governments. You had two commissioners who let the players' union get too powerful. Unions have failed to realize the money has to come from somewhere. Baseball owners don't appear to be the brightest bunch of people. They are content with the current worst commissioner in the entire sports galaxy even after the federal government gave them a good spanking. So now you are stuck with a sport where fans can no longer trust the validity of any accomplishments. There isn't a Lebron James or Peyton Manning in baseball without the question of them being tainted. Who knows if that stink will ever be forgotten. I don't think the average person considers a MLB game a wise choice in their entertainment dollars. There's so much entertainment to compete with that didn't exist over 30 years ago. The prices are getting on par with the NBA and NFL. Most people would prefer to spend money on the latter or on concert tickets and video games. If they want to start improving their economic model they need to start with telling the players' union to piss off.

June 20, 201114 yr If you want as good of a summary of why the Dodgers are in financial dire straits right now as you'll find anywhere, here it is. The short version appears to be that the McCourts reorganized the Dodgers in a way that allowed them to extract something like $200 million in cash/housing/income from the team while selling off assets and turning the Dodgers into effectively a shell with everything like the parking lots, ticket sales, tv revenue, pledged to outside investors in exchange for large upfront fees. Also, one of the McCourt's sons works for Goldman Sachs and has a $600k income from the Dodgers as well. I just liked that part. (Edit: oh, and it has nothing to do with the greedy unions).

June 26, 201114 yr Author Looks like the Dodgers are on the verge of not meeting payroll. If this happens, MLB has the option to take the club from McCourt. I have no doubt that McCourt will lawyer up if MLB tries to do this.
