Quentin Using Extended Thumb On Top Hand

Featured Replies

Have any of you noticed that Carlos is back to extending the thumb on his top hand? He presses that extended thumb right up against the handle.

He's the only player whom I can ever remember doing that. I always thought that is was a very dangerous thing to do.

If he were to hit an inside pitch on the handle, couldn't he sustain a pretty serious bruise to that thumb? Especially in the Spring, with the cold weather, it would have to really hurt.

Then there is the issue of the bat breaking and the portion against which that thumb is pressing breaking in the direction of the extended thumb.

Couldn't he hyper-extend it?

Is this a legitimate concern?

Perhaps. But then again, Q's always getting hurt anyhow.

as long as he's got a 1.500 OPS he can do whatever he wants

No it's not a concern. I did the same thing up through college, never an issue. I haven't seen a closeup of Carlos' swing this year, but my thumb was never extended on the handle at the point of contact. In fact, I'd be very surprised if Carlos' thumb was extended at contact. It's very hard to control the bat when your thumb isn't in a firm position.

He's been doing it for at least as long as he's been here and with as fragile as he's been, he would've got hurt in this area already if this was a legit concern.

Ugh, don't say something like that and tempt fate.

He's done that his whole career.

What the two guys above me said ;)
