June 29, 201114 yr Paul Konerko coming up in about 25 minutes (1:45 CDT) on the Scott Van Pelt Show on ESPN radio. Buster Olney was on a few minutes ago and said everybody talks about the heat on Ozzie, folks should be talking about the job that Kenny Williams has done. Amen, Buster.
June 29, 201114 yr Author Konerko says he disagrees with Ozzie about the loss to Colorado Tuesday night being the toughest loss of season. He said he knows what Ozzie means about the opportunities the Sox wasted, but that the Sox didn't have it, perhaps because of the day off. Said fundamentally the Sox didn't have it. June 29, 201114 yr Author Konerko says playing for Ozzie as a player, players are the most emotional and that they ride a roller coaster because they are the ones out there failing and then doing well. When Ozzie is your manager, he can ride that roller coaster, too. Says for the most part, it's not that big of a deal (when Ozzie goes off the way he did last night). When he gets mad and has a blowup, the players have to cut that loose at some point. Says you have to be a tougher player and have thicker skin to play for him (as opposed to Jerry Manuel, I reckon). June 29, 201114 yr Author Konerko says if you want positives or negatives about the way the White Sox have played this season you can find either one. Says team feels as if it hasn't come close to playing its best baseball. Other teams have let the Sox hang around. The negative view says they haven't played like or looked like a division champ and we're now 80 games into the season. "It's there for us, but to look at it on the field, we have to get better at it," Konerko said. Edited June 29, 201114 yr by winninguglyin83
June 29, 201114 yr Author Konerko says he tries not to say too much to Adam Dunn, just broad-stroke stuff, not fine points of hitting. Says that when you finally come out of it, you learn stuff that sets you up for the next few years. Says that happened to him in 2003 and 2008. Made him a better hitter. Says when you play 15 years, a three-month dip isn't that much when you put it in that perspective. Edited June 29, 201114 yr by winninguglyin83
June 29, 201114 yr Author Says he's not uncomfortable with being considered a star. Says talking about personal achievements are not something he likes to talk about in clubhouse in front of teammates. That is what makes him uncomfortable, talking about himself in the clubhouse. Says because he plays first base, people value his offensive numbers but other guys steal bases and play tougher defensive positions, so they are sometimes overlooked and just as valuable. Would a sweep by the Cubs this weekend put the wheels in motion for some changes? As much as I loved Ozzie's benching of Rios last night, his comments about how he was happy the game ended were kind of confusing. He sounded more like me than as a baseball manager. He clearly didn't read the hyperbole thread.

But Ill take the GM finally stepping up and saying the manager's time has run out and has lost the team and its time for new blood. We are under achieving almost every season, its time to see if someone can right the ship.

June 30, 201114 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) Trust me, I think you and I care more about the Cubs/Sox games than anyone else on here. Not so fast! I hope the Sox sweep the flubs and go on a tear and Ozzie ends up manager of the year. Hoping we lose is never right. Especially concerning the Cubs. Maybe those that don't live in town have forgotten how important it is to lord it over cub's fans. The team in first at the all star break seldom wins it. Last year the Sox got hot too early and were in first at the break. Then what? I believe this team is typical of mlb today. Lacking in fundamentals and much about individual performances for that next big contract. Having said that I think they can put together a hot streak to propel into the lead or right there. Since the division games are coming up, a hot streak and some sustained winning of series after could go a long way toward dropping the teams behind and pulling ahead. Lets start with a sweep of the enemy up north and keep going. Often times the emotion of that series has carried over. If the pitching stays good some of the dead spots in the lineup may wake up. ( Rios, Beckham, Dunn,Pierre ) I mean they have to have better second halves don't they? I for one see this year as kinda crazy so far. Maybe the craziest thing would be ending up on top. If not the Sox who? Edited June 30, 201114 yr by since56

June 30, 201114 yr Thanks to the original thread poster - this was a great read and being outside of Chicago... I for one sure appreciate posts like these muy mucho - as they give me insights into things that otherwise, I'd never be exposed to. Rock on brother (or sister). Rock on into the night.

It's nice getting recaps of this stuff for the out of towners. Thanks!
June 30, 201114 yr Meh, the PK interview was kinda boring. If you've heard one PK interview, you've heard them all. He didn't say anything of substance. I did like what Olney had to say. Basically called out KW and said he's every bit as responsible for this mess as Ozzie is. Edited June 30, 201114 yr by Jordan4life
