Adam Dunn lead off question?

Featured Replies

I know he has been swinging a nice bat this year, but when he leads off innings how many of you would like to see him take a page out of David Ortiz book & lay a bunt down 3rd base line for a base hit???

I def think Dunn should consider this especially when leading off against a lefty. Yes I know he is up there to hit the ball out of the park, but by bunting it in the lead off spot he could spark a little rally with Paulie, AJ, & Rios coming up.

I only bring this up because I saw Ortiz lay a bunt down today in a lead off situation.

It'd be nice if he could do that, but he'd probably have to work on it quite a bit.

Like you said, it's not his job to do anything but hit bombs so it's probably not a great idea.

I'd rather just see him smash some hits oppo field. It doesn't just have to be a bunt.

He isn't getting paid to get singles. If he bats .300 with 10 HR, that's not what he is getting paid to do.

I see what you did there.

Against a lefty pitcher, maybe. Against a righty pitcher I definitely want him swinging.

good managers dont ask players to do things they arent good at, i.e. sluggers laying down bunts

maybe if he was good at it but something tells me he isnt

Besides, even if he could lay down a bunt, unless he's sacrificing someone over, there wouldn't be a high rate of success. He's faster than Konerko, but he'd still be lumbering down the line.

I'm happy with him taking swings the other way. That is the same idea, with the chance of the ball going out of the park.

Think about the scenarios.

In a game where you have a 1 run lead, do you want Adam Dunn bunting to be a baserunner or swinging for the fences? Probably swinging for fences, he can turn that into a 2 run lead pretty quick.

In a tie game, bunt for a baserunner or try to hit a solo shot? Solo shot gives you the lead, bunting requires 2 hits to bring him in. Easy call.

One run deficit? Easy. Tie the game on 1 swing.

2 run deficit or lead? Ok, now you've at least got a case where the extra baserunner can be useful in breaking things open. I might consider it then. The other benefit could be forcing the shift to adapt...but is it worth having Adam Dunn spend time practicing such things, when it took moving heaven and Earth to get him back to being a functional ballplayer this year? I dunno.

2011 Adam Dunn, let him bunt. 2012 Adam Dunn, let him try to hit one in the seats. There's a decent chance he'll get on base anyway.

Why do that? He draws a ton of walks which get him on base at a much higher success rate, and I'd rather see him put a run on the board than clog the bases anyway. He's faster than Paulie, but he's not exactly a burner.
