Yeah, my first thought was Crain was coming back.

Once you send someone down, you aren't allowed to recall them for 10 days without someone going on the DL. This isn't because they like one guy or the other better. It is just roster flexing around the schedule. Marinez will only be here for four days until Humber gets recalled.

The farm got criticized for having a lot of arms that looked destined for the bullpen (still seems to be the case for a number of current prospects), but in reality that's not so bad. Other than the stunning play out of Quintana and the unusual circumstances around Sale's draft selection, they haven't developed starters. Higher upside players (ie starters instead of relievers) grade out better with the prospect gurus so the system has always rated lower.

 

That said, almost every pitching prospect the Sox had recently has had the stuff to be a good reliever. The Sox are very good at teaching control and mechanics and in recent years they've taken to drafting and acquiring big pitchers with big fastballs thinking they can refine the pitcher's stuff. Basically, they're taking advantage of what they do well and this is the result. Pretty cool, huh?

Yeah but we also had B-Mac, Dan Hudson, and Gio Gonzalez in our system too all relatively young, when it comes to pitching as long as the Wsox aren't taking the safe first round college picks I think they know what they are doing, it is the hitting scouting and development in the minors that has been seriously lacking.

Agreed. But I will say they shocked some people with the number of younger (high school or early college) position players they took in this most recent draft... and they have a handful of boom/bust toolsy athletes, particularly outfielders, making their way through the system (Mitchell, Thompson, Walker), so we may see some change in that area over the next year or two. There are three or four infielders who just entered the system this year (draft and NDFA) that are tearing it up as well (DeMichele, Micah Johnson, Grabe, Jirschele), in the very early stages. Some fun stuff to watch.

 

 

The question is whether the depth in arms can actually be used to help acquire a usable starter...?

 

Santiago, Omogrosso, Heath, Veal, Remenowsky, Leesman, Heindenreich, Marinez, Septimo....all these seemingly interchangeable pieces, how much are they actually worth to other teams?

 

How much MORE is Nathan Jones worth than anyone in the bullpen but Reed?

 

How many GM's would choose those 9 arms over Jones? What if you remove/d Santiago from the equation?

Without Sale, Reed, Viciedo, Humber, DeAza, Quintana and Santos....not so good.

This happened at the lower levels when Buddy Bell took over. The problem is those kind of changes take years to have an effect on the major league team. Also with Ventura coming in, you are seeing the change with the major leaguers who were already here.

For all those guys with great arms (Jones, Reed, Septimo, Santiago and Omogrosso), it's mostly a matter of control and their secondary stuff.

 

Marinez threw 93-97, but he was all over the place (not unlike Leyson)...and he hung some of his offspeed stuff up, too.

 

All things considered, tie game...on the road in a hostile environment on a 1st place team in the heat of a pennant race, good job.

This drives me crazy. If producing relievers was so easy, why are teams always looking for relief help and spending so much for it in the free agent market?

Jhan looked good last night. A couple soft hits, but his stuff looks great. Fast four seamer, nice run and drop on 2 seamer, and a sick changeup that is the same shape as his 2 seamer. Hope he keeps it all in the zone.
