NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The White Sox have one potential option for Thursday morning’s Rule 5 draft, but not much else.

 

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said he believes rule changes implemented with the last Collective Bargaining Agreement, which allows teams more control over their prospects, limits the crop of potential draftees. Hahn’s in favor of the change but believes there won’t be much talent on the board by the time the White Sox are on the clock Thursday.

 

Qualified players who are not protected on team’s 40-man roster are eligible to be selected by other clubs in the Rule 5 draft for $50,000. Players who were 18 or younger when they were signed and have been in an organization for five seasons or players 19 or older with four seasons must be protected or are exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

 

“It’s a different kind of draft now,” Hahn said. “It’s not as fertile as it was before the added protection, which I’m fine with. As an organization that has benefitted from being able to have an extra year of development for a player before we have to make that decision to protect them, I’d rather have a better chance to get to know my own and protect the right guys than be able to potentially steal a diamond in the rough for $50,000 from another club. We’re talking through one thing and we’ll see if that happens.”

 

As for their own?

 

Last month, the White Sox added five players to their 40-man roster and feel as if they have protected everyone who needs it. One team source said left-handed reliever Daniel Moskos -- the fourth overall pick of the 2007 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates -- could be selected. Moskos struck out 32 batters in 34 1/3 innings at Triple-A last season.

 

“You never know what tickles someone else’s fancy but obviously a big part of a decision to put a guy on the 40 is the expectation he would get picked if you didn’t not protect him,” Hahn said. “So we’ll see. A year ago at this time we had a pretty decent sense that Terry Doyle was going to get selected by Minnesota, which he did, and ultimately got returned. This year I don’t have that exact sense. I’ve heard a couple of rumored names but we’ll see.”

Sanchez was expected to compete for an Angels utility role in spring training per LA Times' @MikeDiGiovanna.

Angels had just picked him up. Maybe insurance if we can't find a FA utility man.

He sucks, but maybe he will run to 1B.

If this is the guy that's going to get the UTIL spot I'd rather have Lillibridge back.

Yeah, looks like he would be a decent UT guy for the infield. He looks like he has a good arm. Maybe he is a candidate for a santos and they will turn him into a reliever.

I think this is something we are going to see more of under Hahn. It's a $50,000 risk to try and catch lightning in a bottle. If you don't want the player, you can simply send them back and any organization will take their previous player back for $25,000.

No risk here, and adds a potentially nice option to the utility infielder competition.

 

Sanchez has been around for a few years and has put up respectable offensive numbers for a utility infielder. MUCH more importantly, he's long been considered a very good fielder at SS (his primary position), but also at 2B and 3B. I think somewhere along the line, many miss that the most important part of the utility infielder role should be good (or better than good) defense, plus versatility at the SS, 2B, and 3B positions (bonus points awarded if the utility player can also fill-in, if needed, at 1B, the OF, or even at C). Strong defense first is especially important for a team trying to maximize its potential via a strong overall pitching staff. Sanchez's major league offensive stats aren't embarrassing at all, unlike some of the utility players we've trotted out there in recent years.

 

While I liked a guy like Lillibridge because of his hustle and elf/hobbit vibe, he's exactly what we don't need as a utility player. Other than for his magical, lightning-in-a-bottle 2011 power explosion, his major league offensive performance has been putrid. But, again, given the defense first priority of the role, the Stealth Elf was a poor major league defensive infielder, with his only "defensive cred" coming in the OF (for some incredible plays that he made taking advantage of his athletic gifts, but overall he wasn't a trained/skilled OF'er and we're talking about utility INFIELDER anyway).

 

I like adding a guy like this to the mix. He's arguably better than any utility infield candidate we currently have in the system (I certainly don't want to mess with Carlos Sanchez's growth by using him as a major league utility infielder). If Angel Sanchez emerges as the best candidate for 2013 utility infielder -- great; if someone else does, then he's offered back to the Angels and we either lose him or gain additional organizational depth. No risk whatsoever.
