I believe they typically use 45 service days. Unofficially, there are only 41 service days left. He could be called up today and still retain rookie and prospect eligibility heading into next season.

Or he could hit 50 innings, but that won't happen. Rienzo will hit 50 innings and not 45 (pre-September) service days.

He certainly deserves the promotion

Glad to see Goldberg pushed up. If the Sox plan on keeping him in the bullpen I'd like to see him start 2014 in AA.

I wonder where they will start Micah next year. I guess this move will just be to give him some more AB's with the Dash out of the playoff picture, not because he's deserving/in line for a promotion. Excellent contact rate aside, his performance in A+ has been very disappointing.

It has, but I still think he should start next year in AA just to get him at an age appropriate level.

Not so sure anymore - just saw him get hurt in the game. Came out, left shoulder injury. Initial word from Ryan Newman (manager) is he is day-to-day.

Funny, but... he should have been expected to hit like this. The guy barely played in college, he was very NON prospect. But using PED's? That will not go over well.

As long as guys in the 36th or later (or NDFA's) make the majors - and occasionally they do - then it can be a mistake for that reason alone. Beyond that though, I think it has a negative impact on player development. The other players see someone's kid getting playing time, that is going to cause bitterness for some of them.

 

I just don't like it. I don't think it is a BIG DEAL, mind you. But I'd prefer not to see it.

From talking to guys in Bristol I got the opposite impression, one thing several guys cited to me (will be noted in next article) was that a major goal for everyone there was just getting into the routine of pro baseball every day...getting on the bus, getting your work in, dealing with the everyday fatigue, etc. I heard a couple times that they really liked the fact there were several guys with familial connections to the big leagues/higher levels (Palmeiro, Earley, this guy) because those guys had seen how their family members deal with the grind and could give some advice to the other guys.

There might be a difference between "having these guys around for the 18 year olds right out of the draft and for guys from the DSL" and "having that guy receiving regular playing time in AA and AAA and getting promoted despite not performing".

 

Definitely got the impression that these guys like being in an organization that will challenge them with promotions as well if they do their job, so I could also see where having a guy who doesn't deserve a promotion constantly moving up because of his last name would grate on them.

I had never heard that before, but it makes perfect sense.
