Septimo beginning rehab

Sox LHP Leyson Septimo will begin rehab assignment tonight at Triple-A Charlotte. Septimo on DL since 3/22 due to left shoulder strain.

Has he improved or is he still giving up bombs to left handers?

Bring him back quickly so he can be reinstated from the disabled list, designated for assignment and then outrighted to AAA.

I didn't realize he was injured. I just assumed he was in AAA because of that whole "can't get lefties out" thing.

I think you mean the "can't get anybody out, can't throw a beach ball in the zone" thing

And you guys wonder why I keep saying that it's useless to try to develop talent because if it doesn't succeed in the first week, it's declared a failure that should be replaced.

That rule is only for players coming over from other organizations, lol.

If the Sox need to count on Septimo, we are all going to need a rehab assignment. Well, almost all of us.

This post made me look up his stats to show how truly bad he was and his numbers surprised me. The 5.02 ERA is ugly, but his WHIP was only 0.98, and opponents hit .157/.259/.333 off him, which is great. It seemed like everytime out there he gave up a walk and a homer, but that's not true of course.

Scary, isn't it?

Thankfully, Lefties who throw in the low to mid 90's grow on trees and are easily replaceable.

The 5.08 career minor league ERA, including 195 BB in 233.2 IP and 1.61 career WHIP indicates a different story. He's had about one effective season as a reliever (last season), and he still walked 20 in 34.1 IP.

I do not mind saying that he can't get anyone out and can't find the strike zone. His minor league track record has proven as much.

In related news, Rocky Biddle...

I personally love it when relievers throw an easy 95 MPH. I mean, let's ignore the fact that since joining the organization his BB/9IP is above 5. This isn't something recent either. He's struggled with control his entire career and there is nothing to suggest he's improved upon it at all.

Septimo reinstated from the 60-day DL and is outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte.

Wasn't he a converted position player? I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to give him the opportunity. If he can learn to throw strikes he can help us.

There's reason to let him try and work it out, because he has an incredible arm. Counting on him as anything more than a bad Damaso Marte is too much though. If he can figure it out in AAA, then he has a chance to be a really valuable reliever. I'm not holding my breath.

Incredible might be pushing it...I mean, it's not like he's in Sergio Santos pre-injury territory in terms of stuff.

You said it brother :D These folks seem to live and die off one game. Someone strioke out, commits an error or gives up a bomb and it's trade everyone or DFA em,

Of course, there's a different between AAAA prospects/suspects and REAL/legitimate prospects.

Talent.

I'd say it's aptitude. You can't see it, you can only guess at it. The physical ability is the only thing you can really quantify, so you see how much is there & then try to take into account stuff like character, attitude, coachibility, etc. But there's no sure formula as players with little in the way of natural ability succeed, guys with worlds of ability don't, good kids don't learn even though they listen, complete assholes who refuse to listen to anyone still can make it through on their own every once in a while, etc.

Re: Septimo you see there's the arm so you take a shot, because good lefty specialists are nice to have & because he costs really nothing, and at this point he doesn't even cost a 40-man roster spot. The talent is there, the aptitude, who knows, but as a converted position player you'd expect him to take some time and not just set the world on fire out of nowhere like Sergio Santos did.

IMO there is a middle ground between "all-star" and "f*** this guy" and I think Septimo has the potential to settle in that middle nicely at some point.

I wasn't referring to Septimo so much specifically as the players like Jordan Danks or Phegley or Tekotte or Casper Wells or Tyler Greene that are some of our options right now.

Playing Wilkins or Dan Black over Adam Dunn's not going to accomplish anything much for the franchise either, for example.
