I've heard more than one Sox fan recently complain about the pace of the game, with our pitchers. More than one have said that it feels like the pitchers are taking much longer between pitches. If this was true, that might put the defenders at a disadvantage.

 

The starting pitchers haven't changed a ton, though there has been some change. One thing that has changed - the catcher. All are possibilities.

 

So, do people see this as being the case? are pitchers really taking longer? I can't find game time by team data for 2013. Curious on people's thoughts on this. Could be nothing.

I think that's a good theory. If MLB kept a time of possession stat the Sox would be among the worst in it. Too many 1-2-3 innings offensively has to wear on the defenders as well.

It has seemed the pace of the game has been slower this year even with the Sox not providing much offense. There have been 3 hour games were only a few runs have crossed the plate. It could be a factor.

Teams take longer between innings. Adds up. Gotta have those commercials.

yeah, I was more getting at the Sox versus other teams.

Not be be accused of living in 2005, but I did tell you folks Mark Buehrle was a coach on the mound. He was a GREAT EXAMPLE for all our other starters. But noooo we let him and his fast, fast, did I say fricking FAST, manner of pitching go somewhere else.

Judging by the contract he signed, letting him go was 100% the correct decision.

But if our slow pitchers helped cause the defensive woes ... and if the defensive woes caused us to lose 33 one-run games, hmmmm would he have been worth signing?

They lost 21 one run games last year. They won 85 games last year without Mark Buehrle and it took an historical choke to miss the playoffs with essentially the same rotation.

I think this is it. Cooper wants them to pitch more quickly. They seem to fall into that trap of slowing down when they get behind which is caused because they don't attack the strike zone

I doubt he's stat-padding, I think he's just not fully learned going from a thrower to a pitcher yet. Wants to strike everyone out, make the perfect pitch, instead of being OK with early contact.
