September Callups

Featured Replies

Well the roster expansion comes this weekend and I'm sure the Sox will call up a few guys.

My guesses are Paniagua, Ginter, Munoz/Sanders, Jamie Burke and possibly Joe Borchard, although I highly doubt the Sox call up any outfielders. Jon Rauch is another possibility.

All you minor league experts~

Will Jeff Bajenaru play major league ball for the Sox someday?

Gotta love the name. Bajenaru...

He could, but it's unlikely.

I can see maybe calling up Paniagua if he pitches well at AAA.

Possibly Burke for a 3rd catcher.

I have a hard time seeing anyone else called up, especially Adkins, Ginter or Porzio.

The Big Club normally rewards those who have performed well in the minors throughout the year with a call-up. Those I think are worthy: Reed, Munoz, Ginter, and Burke.

Reed will not be called up.

Not exactly sure who they will be, but think relief pitchers and catcher(s).

Rex, do you think they'd let Backman come up?

I'm gonna say yes on this one. Baj has a real good arm and has bounced back strong from an injury. He has been money this year, with the exception of the time right after Royce Ring got traded when the roles of the bullpen changed.

That said, I do think he is a fringe type guy. A setup/middle relief type guy. Whether he makes it or not, will depend on timing and his ability to continue to pitch well. He is the kind of guy that an off year in AAA can make him a forgotten man.

He is not a shoe-in by any means, but in the right situation with the right timing, Baj could be a useful MLB reliever.

Doubtful..... Wally might come for a weekend or so and dress during BP, etc., but I don't see him having any kind of role. I don't see any reason why JM would want his potential successor sitting in the dugout with him. That is why I don't think he received any real consideration for the 3B coaches job this year.

Why not give coop a call up?

Coop??

I would think having Borchard on the bench, a switch hitter with power, could be useful during the stretch drive. I think he'll be called up.

I think as good as Backman is, if he isn't going to be managing the big club, I want him managing in the minors. I think his developmental talents would be wasted as a 3rd base coach.

Reed will not be called up.

JM already said hes calling up one catcher and one pitcher.

My guess is that Bajenaru, who is a rule five guy this year, will be lost to another club. He will be a great MLB player just not for the sox's

That would be another dumb move! Oh thats right it's the sox's

Problem is that is not what Backman wants, and his contract with the Sox is up this year. If the Barons win the SL title again this year, then he should be Minor League Manager of the Year and will likely get lots of interest from other clubs for coaching and/or managing positions.

A lot of things can happen, but I would not be shocked at all to see Wally gone to another org. after this year.

Shoe, I agree that Baj may make it with another club. Timing will be everything for him. That may mean making it with someone else.

If it is the difference between losing Backman and keeping him, then keep him on as a coach somewhere in the major's to hide him as long as possible. But I just think he is priceless to our minor league system.

Problem is he wants to be a Big League manager and will do what it takes to further that goal. He holds the cards after this season, not the Sox.
