November 22, 201411 yr Just DFA'd by the rays.... Would anybody here take him as a backup? I Know he doe sn't hit much but what he does with pitchers and his defense is good, and does a lot of intangibles for pitchers. So strictly as backup and cheap, would you bite?
November 22, 201411 yr If Nieto was going to be the started and we didn't have Flowers I would say yes as a mentor but this isn't the case.
November 22, 201411 yr Author Ok, good arguement there. I just think this is a position that should be filled by a veteran. It always helps that's why those type of guys are still around
November 22, 201411 yr If it comes down to an older backup catcher, I'd be more for David Ross--but I hope it doesn't come down to that either. Edited November 22, 201411 yr by flavum
November 22, 201411 yr I'd have to say no. He's a 39 year old catcher and a right handed bat that didn't hit well last year. I'm guessing but I think the Sox are looking for a LH bat to backup Flowers. Unless the Sox acquire a guy like Grandal, then the backup bat changes.
November 22, 201411 yr Wow, those 2014 stats. Vet leadership is one thing but backup catchers actually have to get at-bats all year
November 22, 201411 yr He'll be 40 next year and had an OPS of .417. Good lord. Flowers does all of the handle pitchers/throw out runner type work just fine anyway. Edited November 22, 201411 yr by GreenSox
November 22, 201411 yr There's a reason he was DFA'd by Rays. Someone stuck a fork in him. He'll make a good coach.
November 22, 201411 yr He had a rep as one of the best in the league at "pitch framing", is that still true?
