The starting rotation is mapped out well over the next year or two. Sale, Rodon and Q have their spots in the rotation. Erik Johnson seems primed to replace Samardzija when he departs. Assuming the Sox sign Fulmer, he will be developing during the 2016 season which is Danks last season so hopefully Fulmer is ready when Danks becomes a FA. At this point, things are well lined up for the starting rotation.

as of today, at this time. taking into all the little things into account. the sp is Sale, Q, Rodoon, Montas, Fulmer Lowry. the one with question marks are Beck and Danish.

 

the reason i am saying question marks is the sox are still not sure if they are starters or rp.

 

edit ... at this point, the sox sp depth, is really looking good in about another yr... 2017 i think

If you're the Cubs, the only guys you can say are off-limits are Bryant and maybe Russell. You just don't trade those guys, period.

 

If you're the Sox... you can justifiably say, for a package of Sale + a Samardzija rental, that "we want any four names we want after that."

 

Castro - also on a manageable deal - slots in nicely at 3B. Schwarber is the best bat - whether it's at C, LF or DH. Almora and Alcantara are both good prospects but the jury remains out.

For arguments sake of a Sale + Samardzjia deal to the Cubs.

And forget all of this flipping stuff. Every time the Sox make a bad trade, I hear "they're going to flip him." Sox don't flip. Nobody flips.

For my two cents, if Bryant isn't in a deal, I see no way possible for the Cubs to get Sale. You have got to be getting a ready made, or young and established superstar type player for him. If Bryant isn't in the deal, you aren't getting anyone with superstar potential. Star potential, sure. But it give up Sale, it has to be a guy who people see as the second coming. Bryant is that guy.

 

The other side of the coin is the Cubs aren't going to be willing to do that. That is why a deal like this never gets done, and is a waste of time for all but guys trying to fill air time... like Chris Rongey.

Considering the Sox have been involved in more than a few three way deals over the past few years (BOS/DET/SOX, TOR/STL/SOX, ANA/AZD/SOX) that isn't really accurate. The Sox are a team that this is fair to use this type of deal as speculation.
