Zika virus

This is getting really bad. El Salvador has told their woman population not to get pregnant for two years. Brazil 9 months.

Brazilian infrastructure should be decent to handle this but it's just a terrible disease.

As long as Brazil doesn't have millions of people traveling there this summer for a major event, they should be fine.

They're expecting it to travel to everywhere in the Americas except Chile and Canada (they don't have the carrier mosquitoes there).

Yeah i'm a little nervous about this. I'm going to Puerto Rico in a month. My wife is half way through a pregnancy. This thing is spread through mosquitoes and not contact, but I read something yesterday that said it may spread through sex. Some researcher got it and then his wife (luckily not pregnant) also got it and she never left the country.

I'm confused. You said it may spread through sex and then you said a wife got it from a husband. Which is it?

Yes i think the safest thing would be to tell people to postpone any joy trips for a year or so.

At present, the response seems to be: travel as normal, but understand that there's a tiny additional risk out there. If you come home and start showing symptoms of illness, get yourself to a doctor quick, make sure they know your travel history when you get there, and maybe be a little careful on the romantic contact for up to 12 days after your return?

How can they hold the Olympics? Isn't this a recipe for disaster?

The CDC today confirmed a first documented case of a sexually transmitted version of this virus.

So yeah, basically if you get sick in the first 2 weeks, head to a doctor and don't have sex during the period of sickness and that should basically cover everything.

Having the Olympics in Brazil was a recipe for disaster for a whole bunch of other reasons before the Zika virus came along.

Sigh, there's no way my wife takes that chance. No sex for 4 months, yay....

Good thing the last four months prepared you, haha.
