BlackSox13
Should be interesting to see how Davidson responds to facing better pitching as teams continue roster cuts and MLB pitchers continue their fine tuning before opening day. Hopefully Davidson continues to get some atbats to help determine if he can contribute at the major league level. For me, Johnson is bitter/sweet. Bitter because he seems to have reverted ( for now) back to 2014, sweet because the FO was smart in not assuming Johnson would be fine and came up with some SP depth. Really curious about Turner. He makes sense as the pen's long man but it seems the Sox see something in him as a potential starter so Charlotte would make sense. But will they pay him 1.5M to play AAA ball? Guessing Turner becomes the long arm of the pen. Some food for thoight about the 1B/DH opening. The Sox have a few internal options that could work in their favor. 1) Abreu DH/ Frazier 1B/ Lawrie 3B/ Sanchez 2B. 2) Abreu DH/ Frazier 3B/ Lawrie 2B/ Davidson 1B. 3) Abreu DH/ Frazier 1B/ Lawrie 2B/ Davidson 3B. In the end, I think we end up seeing Abreu at 1B with the outfielders rotating through the DH spot.

Situations like we saw from Erik Johnson are exactly why guys like Jacob Turner and Mat Latos were brought in here. Hahn learned his lesson about depending on Johnson after the first flop. They just don't trust the kid.
BlackSox13
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 22, 2016 -> 09:00 AM) Situations like we saw from Erik Johnson are exactly why guys like Jacob Turner and Mat Latos were brought in here. Hahn learned his lesson about depending on Johnson after the first flop. They just don't trust the kid. Exactly. I think Hahn deserves some credit for learning that lesson and seeing as how Johnson performed so far, that would have been a bad assumption. Maybe it's just me reading too much into Cooper's comments but he didn't strike me as be overly confident in Johnson. I think Johnson's drop has Hahn and Cooper thinking, " here we go again". Also, I give a huge round of applause to Hahn for all the changes he made on what seems to be a limited budget to work with. I seriously did not expect him to pull off the amount of roster changes that he has.
CaliSoxFanViaSWside
I haven't seen Jacob May or Tim Anderson mentioned in these reports for the last 2 weeks. I don't think either one has been sent down yet so hearing about how they have been doing would be appreciated. My own take is both have looked very good.May is an outstanding fielder and has stole a few bases while holding his own at the dish. Anderson has looked better than expected at SS and has shown a quick bat and some pop. Both have outstanding speed. I think that people are holding back to see what those two can do at Charlotte this year. One thing I'm curious about is the arm of May. Is it strong enough for CF? I've seen mixed reviews on his arm. I've kind of looked at May as a future LF due to his below average arm strength but his defense is well suited for CF. He has played a great CF, and he has 4 of the teams 9 SBs in spring training so far. If he wasn't on the radar before, he is now.
southsider2k5
Speaking of May, here is his catch from yesterday. MLB Pipeline @MLBPipeline Gap zapper: @whitesox #7 prospect Jacob May makes a great diving grab in right-center. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 22, 2016 -> 09:34 AM) May has made a lot of impressions around camp. He has played a great CF, and he has 4 of the teams 9 SBs in spring training so far. If he wasn't on the radar before, he is now. May has been on the radar for some time. And while his defense is a big asset, as is his speed... his hit tool is a question, he's got very little power, and his arm is fringy. Plus he effectively missed half of last season due to that concussion. He's not major league ready. He'll need all of 2016 in AAA (or AA then AAA) at least before he's ready, and maybe some of 2017. Señor Ding-Dong
Sanchez's arm looked more than adequate at 3B yesterday, so it's a bit of a disappointment to see that he's not really being given a fair shake at the SS position.

I wonder which OF would get the call first should the need arise. I think when you look at May versus Coats, it's partially a question of time. If the need is during 2016, I'd go Coats - he is just more complete and more ready right now. Longer term, I think they see May having a higher ceiling (though I am not 100% sure I agree). This all also depends on how they perform in the minors this year.

His OBP in the minors is on the lower side and he can probably only play CF in a pinch, but he really doesn't seem to have any glaring weaknesses that will make or break his chance at being a major leaguer. I don't know if he is ready to hit, but he can catch the ball. Isn't it crazy that people learn to hit a baseball for 20 something years and then are deemed great if they can successfully get a hit 30% of the time? Sanchez just doesn't have the ability at multiple positions that Saladino does, plus he has no real power. I could see him being a guy like Juan Pierre that hits an empty .280 to .300 on a regular basis, but not much else. Saladino is going to give you a decent amount of pop, plus 65/70 defense at 3 positions.

I think I'd prefer to have Saladino start at SS and have Sanchez as the utility guy since his arm appears good enough for SS/3B based off what I've seen from him this spring. I don't think Rollins deserves to start at SS over Saladino, and at age 37 and having played the entirety of his ML career at SS, I doubt he would be able to provide much positional versatility. However, I think Rollins is a lock for the SS position so I guess it doesn't matter.
