Baseball America's Rule V Draft Preview

Kevin Howard, 2b/3b, Reds

Howard has the biggest buzz coming into this year's draft after having a brilliant season in the Arizona Fall League. A fifth-round pick in 2002 out of Miami, Howard won the AFL batting title, hitting .409-3-16 in 88 at-bats. But perhaps his strongest asset was proving himself to be an adequate defender at third base. Howard played third in college, but played primarily second base since turning pro. He's a patient lefthanded hitter with a line-drive stroke, and has shown improved power. Some scouts in the AFL liked him better at third, and Howard could be solid at either spot making him the best overall position player available in the draft. Dan Uggla (Diamondbacks) is another utility player who dramatically upped his stock in the AFL, but Howard's lefthanded bat, which could be valuable off a big league bench, gives him the edge.

Here's our backup for Crede. :D

Umm, maybe I'm crazy, but its not like the Reds are oozing with good players.  If this guy was any good I'd think they'd have him on their 40 man roster.

Call me skeptical although he had a monster AFL.

His AA numbers were pretty good. He doesn't have much power but if he plays decent defense at 3B and 2B, he might not be that bad to take a flier on. I'd rather have a guy with potential like Howard on our roster than Timo Perez. :D

We will not make a Rule V selection (at the major league level). Howard and Timo aren't even a consideration because Timo wouldn't be taking Howard's roster spot.

Point is, good Rule V players come from good teams (teams like the Sox, Angels) that have a lot of talent at the major league level and don't have room to get them on the 40 man roster. That problem doesn't happen with bad teams and thats why you see the better teams typically lose a bunch of guys in the Rule V draft (and usually they go to horrid teams).

If this Howard guy was as good as some of you are implying, the Reds would have put him on the 40. The Reds obviously are taking a risk, but my guess is they either dont' think he'll be picked or don't think that highly of him to begin with.

For example...Fabio Castro >>> Howard (Castro is a guy that may get snagged from the Sox system).

Let's hear from some of our Barons watchers.  You've seen this play for the Lookouts. Any thoughts?

I seen him 17 times last season. He has a good stroke but one thing not mentioned is his defense I was not impressed with his defense one bit made way to many errors (27) and several other miscues that didn't go for errors. Against the Barons this year he hit .234 (15-64) HR 10 RBI and 11K's. His one good game against the Barons came July 31st when he hit a Tracey sinker over the wall in RF for a grandslam but overall he really struggled against Baron pitching and most noticeably against Haigwood when he fanned 3 times and looked clueless.
