Maybe I am mistaken but Getz became GM with Robert coming off of the best season in his career. Getz immediately started another rebuild, waited too long to trade Robert, and watched his value diminish into that of a utility player. If Getz can get praised for the Crochet trade, he should definitely be dumped on for this Robert trade.5 points

If Getz was crazy for picking up the option then he can't also be stupid for getting a couple pieces in return for LouBob without paying LouBob any of that supposedly ridiculous money. Anyway, Sox can now take this money and work on finding an outfielder!5 points

This trade has me bummed out. There is no way it makes them better in 2026, which means that they feel zero urgency to not lose 100 games for the fourth year in a row. The number of failed prospects they’re hoping to catch lightning with would be very appropriate on a AAA team. It seems like they are comfortable running out absolute crap teams for the foreseeable future as long as they can have one of the three lowest payrolls in the league.4 points

JR is very happy tonight as the Sox payroll is hitting ridiculous lows. That being said Robert needed to go (a few years ago in fact...)4 points

Eh, I think unloading a huge contract to an iffy oft injured player on the downside of his talent after 2 sucky years is fine, but we did get garbage in return. It’s an expensive flyer for a cheap flyer. Hopefully they do stick Acuña in CF.4 points

I was in the minority wanting to keep him. My screensaver is Robert hitting a homer at the 78. Oh well, deep down i knew this was coming. Brooks Baldwin step on up!3 points

Awful trade. What a disgusting thing to wake up to. Traded him for a bunch of trash. I’m probably overreacting but whatever.2 points

Payroll sits at 67 million. Lowest in baseball. We had a higher payroll 22 years ago, for reference.2 points

A year ago I posited Acuña and Baty felt like a fair return for Robert (was crucified for this take). This return is notably worse.2 points

I guess Getz was lying when he stated on multiple occasions just how much the White Sox wanted Robert to be their CF. I guess the opportunity to acquire Acuna with little power, low OBP and the ability to play 2B was too good to pass up.2 points
-
But but but, I thought getz wasnt actually trying to trade him unless he was blown away. This team picked up an option to trade it to save money when they have a historically low payroll lol.2 points

This. Would you rather have Murakami or Robert? I think the answer is pretty easy. I wanted Robert gone, and I never expected anything of value in return. Hopefully Getz can utilize some of that $20M to make an addition or two. I won't miss Robert's grimacing face every time he hits the 1B bag running out a grounder.2 points

No, Getz turned a diminished asset into a younger 84 RC+ version of himself. I'm not sure how to express that as an anal sex metaphor.2 points

Alrighty… so I think we see this playing out in the minds of our genius core at the front office as such: 1.) Pauley is the bank here for player development. They see things in the data and figure they’re buying a generally unknown with strong metrics modeled out. 2.) They’ve penciled Montgomery into RF, Benitendi in left, and figure to sign a veteran who was still standing when the music stopped for center field. 3.) They’ll likely play the brother in a super utility role nearly every day and hope to maximize his value with defense and on the base paths while trying to right his bat. Most likely outcome: Robert has his best year as a Met and we end up with a middle bullpen arm who has a couple good years covering the 7th inning. Best realistic hope: Pauley surprises and is a strong number three in the rotation come 2028. PS ( poop script ) - Good on ya for the strong meme game.2 points

Getz is to blame for not trading Robert sooner. The Sox were never going to be competitive with Robert on the team. He waited long enough for Robert’s value to be at its lowest and to have a $20 million dollar salary and a $2 million dollar buyout. Getz has also been with the Sox long enough to know that the owner rarely, if ever, sends money in trades to improve the return.2 points

Mets are in Chicago Aug 21-23. Can't wait for Luis to have like 3 HR 10 RBI and a GG catch just to spite us2 points

I think they’ll sign a starting pitcher and outfielder now. Nothing exciting though2 points

So this was the package in which Getz was holding out, At least he got his guy that can play second base. Again, I don’t understand picking up an option if you are just going to salary dump it before you even play another game.. The while thing was dumb. I will say, Robert not having to be the obvious star of the team might be good for him, but chances are he will still miss 40 games. The Sox were going to be bad with Robert. Now they will be a little worse, but with $20 million off the books, JR probably has already locked in a profit. Bravo.2 points

Robert was scheduled to be at Soxfest. So Jerry also saves two nights at a hotel and minibar charges. He’s gotta love this deal.2 points

Ronald Acuña is a free agent in a few years (as long as options get picked up). We’re just back on the friends and family plan trying to bring him in at the time.2 points

That he could go more than a day without making a post that contained eleven random names that were not related, in anyway, to the topic at hand. Just couldn't do it....2 points

Hope all you trade crazy posters are happy. They lost an elite defensive center fielder who would give them 20 or more homers just to save money.1 point

Big difference in those two players also................. This is a salary dump pure and simple. The official end of the covid era rebuild. Got rid of a 22-40 million dollar contract and an unmotivated enigma of a player. The return is irrelevant.1 point

This obviously isnt true. Robert value has gone down every year since 2023. They could have moved him after one bad year and got much more.1 point

I would have rather just kept him than trade him for Leury Garcia 2.0 and a random pitcher who will never amount to anything.1 point

How many times do you need to be punched in the face by these cheap, incompetent, dweebs before you stop thinking theyre coming in for high five?1 point

I’m not sure how I feel about this trade, I’m hoping they use Robert’s salary and sign a more than decent free agent, right now our outfield is loaded with AAA guys. Probably a stretch with his defensive problems but It would be nice if Sosa could become our everyday left fielder.1 point

Let’s be honest — Getz turned an actual asset into diminished goods and just got bent over a table by Stearns with no lube.1 point

Never thought he’d end up being a salary dump but it is what it is at this point. I’d have kept him and hoped his talent would have matched but I get it. Robert always seemed to work hard and I wish him best in New York. Wish they would have eaten some salary but maybe it didn’t get much? But I’d like to see them invest somewhere - but maybe they just front ran the one free agent signing?1 point

The whole league knew Getz had to trade Robert, and apparently after the big splash, knew the Sox were also broke. Worst Poker Player, Ever.1 point

Safe to say that the Hahn method of signing guys to guaranteed money contracts with option years before they played in the majors did not work out...at all. It does not pay to be cheap asses.1 point

It's wild what free agents are going for, and we still sucked hind tit with Robert, refusing to pick up cash to the end to get an actual return.1 point

Acuna had an OPS+ of 62 last year. In 2400 minor league at bats he has 41 HR and an OPS of .741. Guy’s a R/R tweener who is probably a utility player and a pinch runner. Mets got all the upside here. Frankly, I would rather have a couple of teenaged lottery tickets.1 point

Horrific trade. Acuna is not really a starting caliber player and the other guy is a 12th rounder from last year. WHO the hell is gonna play center. Pure. Salary. Dump.1 point

A part of a long interview I did with Wilbur in 2005: ML: The White Sox fell on miserable times in the late 60's and 1970. I think they lost more games in that three-year period than at any other time in franchise history. The Sox lost 106 games in 1970 alone, it had to be agony going to the park every day. I don’t know how you guys kept your sanity! WW: “It was awful. I’ll tell you how bad it was. The only games that I ever wanted to come into were games where I could pick up a save. I never wanted to go into games where the score was tied because I knew and everybody on the team knew, that we’d find some way to lose the game. We had no chance. The pitchers knew it and the position players knew it.” ML: Your teammate Joe Horlen told me about his 1971 spring training injury which caused him to miss most of the season. But that’s only half of the story because as a direct result of his injury, Chuck Tanner began considering the option of making you a starting pitcher. I have heard you were against the move but for the sake of the team decided to give it a try. Why the initial opposition? WW: “That was a strange situation because even before the injury I was almost traded. It’s true...the Sox had a deal in place with Washington. I was going to be traded for Darold Knowles. But I was holding out that year, I was fighting for more money and I never signed a contract. So the trade was null and void. It was pretty apparent that Chuck (Tanner) didn’t want me in the bullpen. He wanted hard throwing guys and we had players like Terry Forster and “Goose” Gossage coming up so I became a starter. Roland Hemond said this one time and it’s true, “Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.”1 point
