Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Wisebri224 replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Aggressive as in 5/175? Figuring you have to save that other $10 million+ per year by forgetting the RF issue or gambling on a bargain? Even 6/120 for Wheeler gives you that extra $10 million per year toward a RF or another pitcher. I shouldn't but I'm thinking in Jerry terms that paying up for Strasburg means everything else is bargain basement -

But if the Phillies are at 6/120, why wouldn't you go 6/125 if it just takes beating them? If it's the per year money, I go 5/115 if the Phillies go 6/120, as I think he would think he's worth more than $5 million for an extra year. It's not like the Machado money which was $50 million difference. -

There are now 101 contracts in MLB history that have been $105 million plus, soon to be more. About time the White Sox join the party. Stop partying like it's 1999! -

This is scary.....it's not the $22 million per year but the NUMBER of years? So the Sox are offering 4/$88 or even 5/$110 but won't do the 6th year? Is someone out there really willing to something like 6/$125? -
I totally hear ya but my issue is do you gamble with 100 million now or do you wait, let him win ROY then end up paying him 200 million? It’s a numbers game and the Sox normally don’t do well in future bidding wars.
-
Acuna didn’t get the big signing bonus much like Eloy. In fact he got 100k then played minor league ball for 3 years for basically nothing. I think that comes into play when looking to make a deal. Luis has about 26 million reasons to say I’ll wait. I’m good.

It is going to take more to get Robert to sign and get him up here. You figure 3 years of almost no salary and 3 years of arbitration would probably cost the Sox about 50-55 million over 6 years if we compare him to Mookie Betts. Elite players now get 25-30 million but that’s after years up here but even Eric Hosmer got 18 million per. So, do the Sox try 7 years for 100-110 now or gamble having him up for a year, being mvp caliber and basically looking at 20+ after that? I say gamble at the 7 year number, especially when you are so desperate for cost control
-
Cole at 28 is a pitcher the Sox could offer 4 for 140 and blow people away. The top 5 pitchers in the league average about 30 million per so you offer more than the average. If someone goes crazy like 6 for 180 you top your cap but you have to be willing to overpay in dollars if years aren’t going to be there. They can afford it especially on a shorter deal.
-
I know the Sox are on a “small market” budget and say the money will be spent but how long until they start handing out some Eloy type deals to Moncada, Anderson, etc.? Seems like that brings them some cost certainty and would let them know what they can spend in free agency. I just don’t want to hear in free agency for next year they couldn’t pay up for a pitcher because they are saving pennies for 2022-2023 when all these kids need to be paid. Maybe even pay someone like Leury an all utility man contract that every good team has. Happy 4th!

Agreed. There has to be a kid that could get some DH at bats. Just DFA both of “The Manny Project” flops and lets move on.

Why you should not want Reinsdorf to sell the SOX
Wisebri224 replied to 59th street's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Some simple math destroys the argument stated to start this post. I'm attaching links to two articles that discuss revenue of MLB teams. One basically says if you add up the shared revenue splits, a team like the Sox has $75-$80 million in shared revenue yearly before much of anything starts financially (local TV deals, clothing sales), etc.. The second article posts the White Sox revenue in 2017 was $266 million. Franchises don't increase in value from $19 million to $1.3 billion in 30 years because people aren't making money. If someone bought this team, they would be raking in dough as well. The difference with billionaire Jerry is, he is not interested in only pocketing $150 million and spending an extra $100 million on his team. He spends what he thinks is necessary to hit his maximum profit and keep the same base 20,000 fans coming. We couldn't be worse off in this market with another owner. https://thesportsdaily.com/2019/01/18/the-real-business-of-baseball-managing-the-revenue-revolution/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/193645/revenue-of-major-league-baseball-teams-in-2010/ -
Now that I've had a chance to think about things...
Wisebri224 replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This exactly. If 5-6 of these kids pan out, they will be willing to pay someone in a trade for a guy with 2-3 years left to make a run. There will be no long term deals, especially for huge money. I'll be more irritated at this point if they spend $30 million on some slightly above average talent at 2-3 positions for no good reason. Let the kids at this point take their lumps and let's see what we have. I'll be doing that from my living room this year because I'm tired of the spin of this FO. -
Most likely next offseason we bring back Todd Frazier, Adam Eaton, and our number 1 pitcher signing will be Felix Hernandez. We know you’ll spend that 300 million Rick

Who is available in 2020? Looking ahead to the future
Wisebri224 replied to BigSexy23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Jerry continues to make money by the fistful while his team stays at 70 wins and we have more Hawk bobble head nights to try and get crowds over 10,000 except when the good teams come to town to take over our park. Good times -

I offer them $99 for a party suite, tell them it's the best offer they will get this year and I wait, then say "I'm shocked I didn't get a call" when I don't get one. -
Seriously, let's just trade the Padres Eloy for cash considerations since we must be so cash strapped. Done.
-
They better get this Machado thing done. If it's only Pederson, it's basically, "Look, here's our participation ribbon in the offseason." I know it's still looking good, but the longer it goes, the longer you figure it's gonna be bad.

What exactly does this banter have to do with Joc? Maybe I missed it a few pages ago:).

https://twitter.com/buster_espn/status/1083839343452667904?s=21 I don’t think Manny gets 10 years like Buster seems to think right? Everything we hear is 7-8?
-
As long as it is for 8-9 with protections........140 guaranteed for the first 4 and set up the rest like the pitcher the Mariners got. Going to year 5, Sox have 5 years at $160 option or Manny plays 1 year at $40 million then hits FA again. Technically that's $300 million. If he'd sign for 10 years at that I would consider since in the next 5 years, I think a $30- million AAV is going to be pretty good for a top talent?
-
Well crap. I apologize. Guess like everyone else I'm looking for hope as I wait......and wait......

Even the Philly writers are giving up....go Sox!
