  1. I request that if we are going to debate Republican vs Democratic policies we do that in a different thread. Let's leave this one for Reagan on his death and debate the politics and policies elsewhere. Please.
  2. here is the link to the Diane Rehm Show Diane Rehm Show for 6-7-04 here is the description of her show this morning that I was listening to while I was typing: the "other side" that I was thinking of was represented by David Frum and AEI. Not a single person on sotalk. Not a one. Can I make that more plain? I don't see anyone here on "the other side." We are on the side of the Sox. I don't draw divisions and make sides with people who are my friends, or the folks at soxtalk. Cub fans are "the other side." Folks like Frum and the AEI (and the Heritage Institute) are "the other side" to me. No one here. Not a single person here. The comment "I doubt it" was a reference to the AEI. I suggest you looked for things that are not there, Mr. Eye, and if you do that, you can find them, even though they are not there. No one here I see as "the other side" and I was not thinking of a single person here whe I wrote that, or soxtalk posters at all. Fact. Accept. Or reject. Your choice.
  3. I PMed Mr Eye but I am going to comment on this. How this was a jab at Mr Eye is beyond me. I was not thinking of Mr Eye when I wrote that. I was not even thinking of any one on soxtalk at all. In fact I was listening to something on NPR, the Diane Rein (spelling) Show and it was something that was said there that led to my comment, in reflecting on some media coverage since the announcement. You all as individuals here are in my mind a lot, lot less than some of you think. And why it would be presumed that I had given any thought to Mr. Eye on this, I can't fathom.
  4. Nuke, I opposed Reagan's election both times with all the energy that I had. And I have much to say about all 8 years of his administration and his legacy. The day he was shot, I was the only pastor in this community who threw open my church for a continual prayer vigil until we knew he was safe out of surgery. I placed a tv on the lectern and we prayed for his recovery continually for hours. When (and you all may be too young to remember) Reagan came out of surgery, the doctors said he was ok, and the NCAA basketball championship game began (Indiana won), we knew he was ok and the prayer vigil ended. The following Sunday we of course offered thanksgiving for his continued recovery. These last ten years, as he descended into Altzheimers and Nancy Reagan has lobbied for stem cell research (which the current administration opposes) my heart has gone out to Nancy because I know how hard it is to care for an Altzheimers loved one, and for Reagan, I would not wish that or any disease on anyone. To slowly lose touch with reality and know that you are doing so, that is a cruel thing indeed. Saturday morning I had a feeling his time had come. There was a brief clip of Reagan on some news channel; I was at the gym and the sound on the tv was turned down but I thought, how much longer can he hold on. That afternoon I was at the local bar/restaurant playing the NTN game and watching the Arena Football League game waiting for the Belmont Stakes when the news was announced. A good friend and Reagan supporter was on the other side of the restaurant. I went over and offered my condolences. I then set up several of the restaurant's variously placed tvs (it is like a sports bar) to the news channels so other customers could watch the news. Nuke, I opposed Reagan's election both times with all the energy that I had. And I have much to say about all 8 years of his administration and his legacy. Time and place is important to me. Out of respect for the family who has suffered these past ten years with difficult care for one they loved, out of respect for those who mourn his death, and out of respect for a man with whom I had bitter political disagreements but with whom I also once had a cordial correspondence beginning in 1967 or 1968, with whom I have no personal bitterness, out of respect for the dead, this is not time and place. My first actual contacts with Reagan were in 1965. At the time I was in a different political space than now and the question was whether he would run in Califonia (for governor) or Illinois (the Senate seat Percy won). At that time I wanted him to run in Illinois. It was a few years afterwards that as I shifted in my political philosophy that I had occasion to correspond with him. In the 1980s there were some occasions when in the course of public politics I butted heads with him and his administration which was widely noted in the Michigan statewide media. I still have my autographed Reagan 8 by 10 glossy and all the mail and such that he sent me. I have no disrespect for the man, but strenuous and deep disagreement with his policies and philosophy and administration, but not now, not now to deal with that. And after 10 years of suffering from that horrible mind wasting disease, the words that come to mind are from the book of Isaiah: Comfort, be comforted, my people. For your warfare is ended." Rest eternal grant Ronald, O God, and let light perpetual shine upon Ronald. And may Nancy and the family feel the support of the love that Nancy bore for her husband all these many years, by the knowledge of God's grace and the Resurrection, and the love and caring that is felt towards the family by so many. And I wonder if on the occasions of the deaths of Carter and Clinton if the same respect for time and place will be shown on the other side. I do rather doubt it.
  5. sorry I wasn't able to intervene better

    Harry Potter 3

I happen to be a real fan of Alfonso Cuaron's movies and while I loved the first two Harry Potters for the sheer fun, I wondered how Cuaron would do HP. Since I was looking for the directorial differences, I can't answer that unobjectively. I think Cuaron brought the characters into adolesence beautifully. This is a much more emotionally complex film and the action sequences are brilliant but there is alot more plot development than we had but then the third book was more complex too.. This is not a wide eyed innocent Harry Potter anymore and Hermine is taking no s*** from any male. Harry is taking no s*** from anyone. Thus it was perfect. I agree with 56789 that Hagrid's house appeared to be in a different location.

    Finally Legal!!!

    happy birthday
  13. The Whitecaps put up these banners of their former players in the big leagues and my seat was directly under the Robert Fick banner. For new comers or forgetful long timers, there is no player that I detest as much as I detest Robert Fick. I could have moved a section over and sat under the Jeff Weaver banner but I passed on that. For some reason my grandson cannot abide Dmitri Young. Absolutely abhors Dmitri Young. He'd go to every Tiger game at USCF and every Sox game at Comerica if he could just to boo Dmitri Young. The best I can figure is the kid thinks D Young is a big fat slob. Kid has got a point! The Sox had a team in that league Burlington Bees, How come they are no longer a Sox affiliate? I notice the Sox-less Burlington Bees have an average attendance of 809 a game.
  14. The last place Fort Wayne Wizards or whatever they are invaded the home of the next to last place West Michigan Whitecaps (a/the Tiger A farm team) and I felt obligated to cheer for the Whitecaps since they are the local team - and the Whitecaps defeated the evil Indiana team. My Sox tatoos were quite the curiosity in our section (right behind home plate). Let it be known that I represented well for us.
  15. thank you for noting that - I was going to and I forgot but thanks for posting and big congrats to Frank
  16. 1. As well you should. I was born at the perfect time, to hit adolesence as the Beatles hit America. 2. Not dfficult to pursue from an academic standpoint, but less likely to hold the academic standpoint as the only one. As I suggested, but not well written enough, there may be three (or more) opposing interpretations that we should hold onto for the larger truth than any one interpretation can explain. And that of couse is a microcosim of my view points on everything, 3. Capitol screwed up a lot. They didn't know what they had - nor would they likely have, as a totally new phenomena was upon them, as well as the nascent birth of the counter culture. It took a few years for Capitol to grasp that. However, the Beatles themselves, Epstein, grasped it. A dirty secret of my generation is that the rest of you only think you have seen merchandizing. From our Beatles notebooks to our Beatles dolls (and I have my George) to Beatles glasses to Beatles wigs to Beatles whatever - go to ebay and check it out - they invented merchandizing. If 4 mop tops could be tossed on a product, it was. If I had one of everything I remember seeing at the Woolworth's, I'd be a rich man today. 3a. Wasn't Please Please Me (the 45) released originally released in the US (VeeJay) a failed release in 1963? I Want to Hold Your Hand was a better song, a fuller sound, and I love both songs ardently but IWTHYH from the opening chord progression heralded revolution. When they were both out on 45 at the same time on the charts, I think it was recognised that IWTHYH was the place that PPM was only pointing to. 4. Historically authoritative it was. We were into that from the beginning, not only with Please Please Me (the 45) but when Love Me Do was released, it was universally recognised and promoted as a historical release, not a "current" "new" song. May be the first "rarity" in rock and roll! Your Anna and Chains friends are - um - silly. The Beatles EPS were little sold but they were out. I got my Anna/Chains/Misery/Taste of Honey at the Ben Franklin in 1964. I got my Mr Moonlight/Honey Don't/Everybody's Trying to be My baby/I forget the 4th at the Woolworths (as a gift for being a good boy during major dental surgery) in 1965. No, I do not still have them. They perished in The Great Record Diaster which I shall not recount as I will cry. But thing is, that music was out there. The Anna/Chains ep was historical when i got it. Mr Moonlight ep was current stuff not regognised as A nor B sides. Your friends should have recognised the antiquity of Anna and Chains. In one of the bands that I belonged to, the first one, I was the first songwriter. No one liked what I wrote. So I wrote the words to Anna as if they were mine and submitted them. That too as rejected. I told them those were Beatles lyrics and the problem was not my lyrics but their lack of song writing ability. I was then assigned to only play the drums. 5. WRONG! The right decision would be to release both versions in the catalogue. To make money, I would if I had the rights. By the same token I have various uncollected writings by Luther and the authoritative works. Lots of repetition. In fact a lot of the fun is seeing the different usage of the same writings. Of such much theology actually gets done. The Address to the Christian Nobility as a stand alone is one thing; put it in an archival collection with The Freedom of the Christian and Babylonian Captivity of the Church, it takes on a whole different tone. If all the versions were in release, I would ahve done all the American first, but I would have done them all. And then the discussion of the differences would be much more fun for me because I could lay them side by side and look. 6. BINGO! Exactly! IWTHYH is not on any authoriatative UK elease! Not any! So much for it being auhoritative when the song that rocked the world is not even available! That is a grievous ommission! Were it not for past masters and hits and One, it would be unavailable, and for the academic approach that Aboz seeks, it is totally missing, like examing Tut's tomb missing the saracophagus. So as I say, all the versions, US and UK, should be released and IWTHUH would once again be in the canon. 7. Different country, different marketing. I note that with the advent of the download and the mp3, America returns to the singles version of colecting music. You don't want the whole album, just the songs you want, so those are what you get. We are back to collecting singles again. Everything old is new again. 8. That was a hoot as was Sie Liebt Dicht. My ex made off with my US Rarities but aren't they both on Past Masters 1? 9. Up until that paragraph, I thoguht you were inteliigent. Now I conclude you are looney as can be. I spent more time doing Free Street theatre to Susie Creamcheese than anyone you might know - come up to Chicago and meet my best friend and we will take you back to the days when Susie Creamcheese wouldn't come out. (we also do john sebastian at Woodstock and other selections of the 60s). Freak Out, which I proudly own a well worn copy, was a seminal release, to be sure. But Sgt Peppers was and will always be the first album that made the LP an art form, what Rubber Soul and Revolver were working towards. The nadir of the LP as an art form came quickly: the Rolling Mimics Stones with Her Majestys Satanic Service or whatever they titled that travesty Beatles rip off. Then we had Tommy, Live at Leeds, Simon and Garfunkle's Bookends, and Pink Floyd ouevre, and the LP as art form was ritualized. The greatest concept album to me though is the White Album. It signifies the divergence of the inviduals of the Beatles but Martin's arrangements and the entire mix and play list is an incredible unity that somehow makes enormous gesctalt (spelling alert) that is still the tops to me.
  17. Damn you are nasty with the player analogies tonight!
